At best the guy will have had his journey interrupted while the Police check out his bona fides, and check ownership of the van (which can be quite a break in your journey) find he has just bought the van and issue a fixed penalty notice  for having illegal plates- £60, and then ask him to take his papers into the nearest Police Station  - more inconvenience

At worst he gets arrested. Probably for being incompetent.

I dare say that your average caravan thief takes a spare number plate with him so that he does not draw attention to himself as he makes his getaway. It's your law abiding citizen who buys a van without taking that spare plate who gets caught because he genuinely does not think about the plates on the van having to match the car when he goes to collect his  new pride and joy.

Just a point for those of you buying a van to bear in mind.

I always seem to look at number plates as i'm passing outfits, don't know why,

I've moved a few vans where there have been earthing problems on the lights and it's a bit more involed than just bulbs so i just put a light board on the back with a proper reg plate on it, until i'm back at base. been stoped a couple of times, I've just explaned and i always get a recipt from seller with their number on it. they've been happy.

Good on ya - I wish everyone was like that. Mind you its just got me thinking If I was pulled over I dont think I could prove its mine as I dont usually have the documents with me. If you have to hand documents in within 48 hours I would be stumped if I was away for a couple of weeks.
