Whilst travelling down the A12 yesterday morning I just happened to look at a Bailey being towed by a Jeep. I noticed that the reg on the van was different to the one on the Jeep. I tried to get OH to get the reg of the Jeep to ring the local police but she missed it. So I drove down the next slip road and back up again, giving him time to get past me Then taking note of both reg numbers we rang the local police and gave them the info
As I said to the OH it could have been something completely innocent Someone just bought a van, a company moving vans about, someone moving their van from storage to the drive for the season or even Diddycoys
I felt better for reporting it as I thought what if that van was stolen from someone's drive its their pride and joy.
If I caused a bit of hassle to someone that was completely innocent then I would apologise straight away.
Would I report it again............yes I would
------------- Nothing nada zilch no camping this year boohoo
in January last in year I changed my car, and thought no more about it, come April I collected the caravan from storage and away we went for a short break, it was only during the holiday when I spotted the number on the back of the van that I realised that I had forgot to change the caravan number plate over.
------------- "PACESETTERS" German Shepherd dog display team, we are out and about raising money for guide dogs.
At best the guy will have had his journey interrupted while the Police check out his bona fides, and check ownership of the van (which can be quite a break in your journey) find he has just bought the van and issue a fixed penalty notice for having illegal plates- £60, and then ask him to take his papers into the nearest Police Station - more inconvenience
At worst he gets arrested. Probably for being incompetent.
I dare say that your average caravan thief takes a spare number plate with him so that he does not draw attention to himself as he makes his getaway. It's your law abiding citizen who buys a van without taking that spare plate who gets caught because he genuinely does not think about the plates on the van having to match the car when he goes to collect his new pride and joy.
Just a point for those of you buying a van to bear in mind.

I always seem to look at number plates as i'm passing outfits, don't know why,
I've moved a few vans where there have been earthing problems on the lights and it's a bit more involed than just bulbs so i just put a light board on the back with a proper reg plate on it, until i'm back at base. been stoped a couple of times, I've just explaned and i always get a recipt from seller with their number on it. they've been happy.
Good on ya - I wish everyone was like that. Mind you its just got me thinking If I was pulled over I dont think I could prove its mine as I dont usually have the documents with me. If you have to hand documents in within 48 hours I would be stumped if I was away for a couple of weeks.

We've just purchased a new car. Got a good price so they wouldnt throw anything in on the deal - full tank, car mats, mud flaps etc. We did however, manage to negotiate an extra number plate. Its sitting in the living room at the moment, so I guess we can't forget to attach it to the van.

I think if you've registered with CRIS, the police only have to check your van's vin to see who owns it...bit like checking your car reg on a normal spot check.
The point here is, it is an offence to show the wrong,or no number plate on the back of a caravan. So it should be reported. We are all responsible for compliance with the law. On a different note while working as a warden, a van was stolen from our site.(while we were off site). It was spotted by an eagle eyed caravaner on the M4. The van had an awing while on site, the thieves simply ran a stanley knife around it and drove away. it was the beading in the rail that drew attention.
