Apologies , another post from me, we have just bought our first caravan, and have bought v good locks and property marked it well etc to prevent theft
We have AA that covers the caravan as well, and we cant decide if £500 value caravan is worth insuring, what does insurance actually cover apart from theft on a 25 year old non cris registered van
I've got a £500 'van & I don't insure it. You are insured for third party risks while towing with your car insurance. Caravan insurance covers fire, theft, accident damage(while towing or anywhere else)& third party risks while not towing. Unless you are worried your unhitched caravan might roll away &/or cause carnage in some shape or form its not really worth insuring a £500 caravan. Costs about £70 if you do.

I wouldn't bother. If your van did get stolen you would have to pay £100 excess and then the loss adjuster would value the van. He may well value it at less that the £500 you have insured it for. So you would only end up getting a couple of hundred quid if the van was stolen or written off.
Hi there jessegee.
We too are new to the caravannning side of camping. We bought a 1990 van recently of a similar value and have decided to insure it. I just thought for the relatively small amout it was to insure it(50ish) it gave peace of mind. It has public liability insurance and it covers if you have an accident and 3rd party cover. We went with the caravan club as it and the Camping and caravan club policies were firstly the most competative and secondly seemed to have the cover which suited us best.
We aren't in the position to cover someone elses costs if damage or anything happened. Yeah we have a wee starter van of minimal value that we could walk away from but legal cover and 3rd party I am not so sure about.
Happy caravanning and I hope you never need insurance no matter what you decide!
just found for though,t i never used to insure ours but on holiday at hendra in cornwall about 5yrs ago, there was a caravan that set on fire due to items close to the heater we were 5 vans away now if your £500 van was distroyed maybe no big issue but this fire also damaged 2 cars and 2 other vans so all of a sudden the £500 caravan becomes a £20,000 plus third party claim
this made me get insurance on my cheap caravan and will now always insure it

It would be difficult to prove liability in such a case. If your own caravan or car was set on fire by a fire in another caravan your first call would be to your own insurance co. It would then be for your own insurance co to recover their losses if they cared to. Insurance co's do not usually pursue private individuals in such a case.
We insured our first caravan which cost £1000 partly because we didn't have spare cash to replace it if it was stolen and also when we had a quick add up of the contents we realised that there was a fair few quid worth of stuff inside - awning, tv, aquarolls, wastemaster, clothes, pots/pans etc
Mines insured, mainly because the rules of the storage site require it.
Also as others have said theres always the possibility you may cause damage to other peoples property while using the van and insurance provides peace of mind.

yes tentz but if your van is not insured and also the van that is also damaged not insured i would asume owner of the ( in this case ) caravan on fire would have to pay for damaged caused to uninsured vans
