Passed a caravan yesterday snakeing, they couldnt of being more than 50 mph.

Just a reminder for every one to make sure they load their caravans correctly and their cars of course.

I'm not going to say which way i would load them as I dont want to start a long thread arguing about how to load a car or caravan, just wanted to remind people to be carefull, make sure every thing is secure etc.

Check the weight of the caravans and cars etc to make sure your not over weight.

I'm out for the first time this year on the weekend. So i'll have to check the tyres, brakes, wheelbearings etc before leaving.  I heard of so many stories last year of people have accidents just hope there is none this year.

Happy holidays every one and be carefull.

So all you want is a another pointless thread sl*gging caravanners who have no clue how to load their outfits then? Post all your stories of snakings/mismatches/crashes here folks.

I think Mark was just voicing his concerns about people towing caravans and nothing more and I fully support his comments but at the end of the day Mark, there's plenty of good advice out there in books and websites but a lot of the time it's down to sheer ignorance of following the necessary guidelines. I can speak from experience because back in 1990 I changed from a trailer tent to a caravan but back in those days we didn't have accesss to the internet like we have today to find out information although there were books available on the subject. I learned the hard way all because I didn't do my homework before hand and regarding matching the outfit, noseweight and loading I basically done everything wrong. Due to this I had a severe snaking problem on the M6 due to my own ignorance which my caravan eventually collided with the car due to a jack- knife when a coach over-took me. Not long afterwards I sold the caravan and gave up caravanning for good as it not only hugely shook my confidence but it also eliminated the pleasure and seen caravanning as nothing more than a daunting experience . I didn't return to caravanning again until 15 years later in 2005 but by this time I had gained so much knowledge and realised that there was much more involved than just hitching up a caravan and hitting the road. This time I started as I meant to go on and now always check my tyre pressures, wheel bolts, noseweight and always load the caravan correctly before starting out. In the last 7 years I haven't had a problem with snaking whatsoever but this is all down to the facts of following the correct procedure and adhereing to it as well but I still don't like to get complacent. So even though you voice your concerns regarding snaking, the problem is you can't control people's ignorance to towing I'm afraid. You can try to educate people (as in this thread) if they are willing to learn (and this is the purpose of this forum) but you will always get a minority that don't do their homwork and necessary checks before hand which can lead to putting their own lives at risk and other road users as well. I learned the hard way and so will a lot of others, but the facts are that luck must have been on my side that day.

Was following an outfit on a motorway the other week that was snaking all over the place at just under 50 - hardly surprising really - it was a Nissan Navara towing a trailer with a LWB Merc Sprinter on. Was surprised it was even pulling it!

Even more surprising was that the Police car which had passed me moments before I caught up with it hadn't pulled it over.

maybe they had more important things to do.

I once had a mercedes vito van (not as big as the sprinter) with a bmw 5 series estate on its trailer pass me going up past scammonden on the m62. At the time i thought "that looks a bit heavy for such a small van"

Lo and behold, on the other side of the hill going down towards manchester the guy had lost control and there was a smashed up 5 series and van on the hard shoulder. Just goes to prove why you should try to stick within the 85% limit.
