Bit of an accident on the M5 this morning about half a mile north of the Exeter/Exmouth junction North bound. Looked like a straight forward 5 vehicle shunt.
Unfortunately, and my sincere sympathy for the owner, vehicle No 4 was a car and caravan.
Looks like the front car stopped for some reason quickly, and then vehicles 2,3,4, and 5 were unable to stop in time.
So poor No 4 lost front end of car to vehicle in front, then had a car in the rear of their van to boot.
Hope no one was injured.
Well played to all though, all seem to have stayed in lane and not compounded the accident.
Sounds like our experience on the M5 last summer when we had traffic slowing ahead and then an idiot jumping into our braking space so as to get to the off slip a couple of seconds sooner. There was usually someone else up the tail of the van too close followed by others either too close together by choice or cos someone jumped into their braking space.
We were just lucky it didn't end in a similar way but happened at more than one junction. That and idiots joining the M5 and insisting on being in front instead oceanic behind the rig.
More consideration of other road users needs to be taught and less 'me, me me, me'.

As general driving goes, couldn't agree more Mature-Student. When travelling at caravan speed, which we seem to do all the time now (even when caravan isn't on the back!), we see some terrible driving!
you do get used to it, have to when like me you drive hgv for a living, you can normally sit there and watch them coming from behind and tell what there going to do, but does really annoy
i hope all were ok, we were coming that way last night....took 7 hours from st ives to bath yesterday!
i didnt like the HGV that was stuck 2 ft away from my van at one point (no exageration)....we were only going 5 mph in traffic, and i wanted to leave a safe distance in front of me....but he was a right bully.
I must agree with the point above, why do some HGV drivers insist on sitting a few feet away from the car/wagon in front? They will not arrive at their destination any quicker by doing this. It is bad enough being hit from behind by a car. Yes it has happened to me, i was stationary at the time letting oncoming traffic through when a Metro ploughed into the back of me hitting me so hard that my back doors wouldn't open & my car was almost written off, if a small car can do that much damage just think what a 40 tonne wagon would do. I was on the M6 a while ago driving through roadworks with average speed cameras, sticking to the 40mph limit when i got a wagon up my backside, the driver was flashing his lights & i could see him effing & jeffing in my mirror because i wouldn't speed up, he was so close behind it was frightening i turned off at the next junction to get out of his way, the strange thing was that i was in the left hand lane at the time & the middle lane was clear so why didn't the HGV just pass me if he was in such a hurry that getting a few points on his license for speeding would not of mattered to him? I'll never know
steve1961 now i dont agree with what the driver did, but he most likely didnt overtake as he was not allowed into the middle lane, as alot of roadworks these days have width limits stopping us using any lane but the inside

40? as far as i am aware all roadworks on the m6 are 50, was the speed shown on the overhead gantrys and did the 40 sign have a white ring around it, if not no wonder he was flashing you its only advisory speed
there again he was prob irish driver therefore speed limits do not apply ( and quite a few scottish ones these days)
Hi Mike, i hope you don't think that i am having a go at you or other truck drivers in general, there are good & bad in all walks of life, i am too old now but i wish that i had taken my HGV a good many years ago as i enjoy driving & have always fancied a driving job. you are probably right about the lanes i think they had narrowed through the roadworks, Trevlunar, i cant remember if they had overhead signs as it was a good few years ago (i dont think they did) all i do know is that i was sticking to the limit it may have been 50 not 40MPH which was written on road signs approching & through the roadworks they had loads of signs up warning of the limit & cameras, i can remember opening my window & pointing at a speed limit sign at the side of the road & up at a camera to try & show the lorry driver why i was taking my time
not at all, think youve put it i a good way, theres always bad apples, from walking to airplane captians,
ive been only driving 10 years on the lorries and its changed so much, its not fun anymore

unfortunatly there are some stupid people out there who have no idea what a braking space is until they get 2 and a half ton of mitsubishi 4x4 pulling 1 and a half ton of caravan up there rear end.

That was my worry Bob. Most of the time the car that jumped in front of us (and we don't leave excessive room to try and prevent just this sort of thing!) was a tin can like a fiat or ford ka.
Our tow car is a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee (affectionately known at home as the tank) and we tow a 1991 twin axle with a MTPLM of 1300kg. The person jumping in may think they can stop if they have to but don't realise our 3,100kg outfit can't defy the laws of physics and needs much more room to stop and a wee bit more if we are to stop safely.

should have taken his reg.no and company name and tel.number and give em a call,i'm sure they would have been interested.
Would not a quick camera shot to prove just how close the driver is added would let the firm know they really were that stupidly dangerous and they (the firm( will be paying the costs if it happens. It would not be your word against theirs as you have better proof than just words.
Just a thought. As once a long time ago we were told always have a camera with you as if the person is local they can get away with it by saying you the visitor do not know the road that well and caused it. That is what happened to her, she had not taken a shot of it, but never again, she now carries a small camera ready for anything. The other driver a local got away with it, she had to pay all her & his costs. A rise in her insurance cost not his.
We have one know, I feel like taking those who are using their mobil phone as they come to darn close driving one handed round corners.
