Hi, can anyone advise the best make/ type of jockey wheel to use with a motor mover?
We were advised to get a pneumatic one when we got the mm but even that dug in and bent its axle on uneven ground. It wasn't much money so I'm wondering if there is a Rolls Royce of jockey wheels that might be a bit beefier.
Probably better to get a genuine Al-Ko rather than cheap imitation for half the price. Plenty have tried pneumatic tyre & gone back to the wide plastic tyre so this might be a better bet.
I was really struggling with the standard hard wheel on my BPW jockeywheel with gauge and Powertouch AWD movers, not to mention that I had deformed the outer tube by tightening it too much.
I decided to bin the gauge as they are iffy at best and bought a new BPW with pneumatic tyre (no gauge) direct from the importers for £35 + VAT. The difference when moving a twin axle van with movers on all surfaces is amazing. Be very careful about buying just a replacement wheel alone as often they are not rated for the weight of a caravan and also often come off the rim. As Tentz says, stick with Alko/BPW to be on the safe side. Also before you buy make sure that the jockey wheel wider pneumatic tyre will lift up OK without interfering with the chassis brake cables etc.
I was about to ask the same question and I'm glad you did. My existing jockey wheel drives me mad and really makes caravanning stressful as it keeps coming off it's thread . I have persevered up til now, putting it down to my inexperience but now I know it's not me!. I too have a big twin axle with a mover and hadn't even thought about this and or buckling when thinking about a replacement or even that it would fit the holding bay. It is the jockey wheel that came with the caravan, an elddis avante 636 and it has a BPW chasis. Apart from the threading issue, I have never experienced any of the above. There is no mention of the make and model of the jockey on any of the info that came with the caravan so would Alistairs BPW jockey wheel fit mine and if not where do I look for the right replacement.Any advice welcome
Have spent all afternoon trying to find prices for a BPW jockey wheel with clamp on line but can only find trade only(no prices) or generic makes. BPW website doesn't price or give dealers. Where did you get yours Alistair?

I have the alko premier jockey wheel as well and very happy with it on my caravan, works well with mover on gravel drive.the price you are asking is very good I paid £49 for mine but normally seemed to be priced at least £70+'if I hadn't brought one already would have brought yours
would this fit my van as I have a winterhoff stabiliser and hitch, and bwp chasis all bpw products. would the alco jockey be the same width as I thought alco products only fitted each other or are jockey wheels generic? sorry for silly questions.
Hi,
If you look at this link, i think it shows that the bpw spec jockey wheel is near identical to the alko one -

Ie they all seem to have 48mm shafts. There are a selection of wheel sizes on each, so measure yours and go for a similar size.
Karen, what do you mean by yours coming off its thread? If you keep unwinding them, they will all come undone. It could be more a problem with how you are using it rather than an issue with what you have. I could be wrong though, just not sure what you mean by coming off its thread.
Hi,thread is maybe the wrong word, you can hear it click when trying to wind up. it gets so far and then just spins.it usually only manages a couple of inches off the ground and it starts to spin, we often have to put the steadies down to give us the extra height to unhitch. Several other people have had a look at it and we have dismantled it and put it back together. There is a groove that the spindle fits in and it keeps falling out of this and there is no purchase to hitch up or down. Its not practical to keep dismantling it to put back in the groove. It never comes undone from the spindle as there is not enough tension to get it that far up that it falls out. When it works and is engaged there is no problem(which is becoming less often!) but it slipped when using the mover despite the clamp being secure and seems to be getting worse. I think the notch that keeps it in the spindles has worn down. I am however open to the fact that i might be doing something wrong but I've lost confidence in it and it's putting hubby and me off going anywhere in the van as it takes ages to get the caravan unhitched, which we have to do reasonably quickly as we block the street to move the van into the garden
ps tried that website but no prices. alco jockeys seem more common so maybe will have better luck finding them I am reluctant to try the generic ones because of the comments above. thanks for this. apologies for the multiple entries too busy ranting
I am trying to find the contact info for the BPW wholesalers that I dealt with. I will let you know as soon as I have it. We has a problem with our original jockey wheel on the Compass which sounded very similar to the probs that you are having on yours with the Avante. When I took it apart there were bits of broken metal inside and as I mentioned earlier I had distorted the tube by clamping too tight. It doesn't matter what you replace it with, either BPW or Al-ko although I will stick my neck out and say that the latter is perhaps a better quality bit of kit. There are are lots on BPW chassis Elddis caravans sporting an Al-Ko jockey wheel from what I have seen, so perhaps there is a problem with their robustness.
Hi again. Sounds to me like your winder is damaged or broken.
I know there were no prices, just put it out there to show that the shaft is the same diameter and that I'm sure there will be a wheel style to suit you. I think that any brand will do the job fine, with alko being the obvious choice. Get one fitted and hopefully you can enjoy many more trips. Hope I've been some help.
cheers for that .sometimes just a bit a of reassurance is good as I wouldn't have had the confidence or knowledge to go for something other than the bpw.If you have a contact Alistair that would be great but will start looking around at other brands. one more daft question, what advantage is a telescopic wheel as I thought the winder did the same thing?
