Could one of the experts clarify the issues involved with buying a used caravan privately. It seems that all caravans manufactured by NCC members since 1992 are registered, what paperwork should I be looking for? I'm actually looking at caravans around 2002-2006 vintage, will these all be CRIS registered? Any advice will be much appreciated.

Our van was older, but we got the full history paperwork, everything from the catalogue to the curtain care pamphlet, and the owners handbook which is like a car log book, check the chassis number against the log book.to be sure it matches. you could try google search to see if that chassis number comes up as stolen etc, but we didnt, it was very obviously owned by the same people since 1984. This is what the log book looks like

page 2 has the hand written details from the original dealer etc

You could make a note of the chassis number etc and consider registering it on one of the free websites like www.immobilise.com or get it cris registered. If there are any etchings on the windows make sure they match the log book/cris registration site

Make sure you try it all out , from towing to using the gas an electric/water systems, especially private sales, like a car they are an unknown quantity and things can stop working unbeknown to the owners. Maybe buy a touch only damp metre off ebay, and check all areas.

Go on Hpi website check that caravan you are interested in buying is hpi clear. Cost is £14.95. Previous owner should be the registered owner & if he bought the caravan secondhand he should have updated the details. Unfortunately unlike cars there is no legally required procedure on change of ownership. However if you are paying several £1000s don't buy if its not clear.

Although UK built caravan since '92 are Cris reg with older ones the details may not have been updated thru several owners & caravan could even have been stolen several previous owners ago.

Cris reg is not a legal requirement & if you are interested in a continental built caravan, Hobby, Burstner etc you may find it is not & has never been Cris reg even if it is a late model. Not a problem as long as you can prove beyond all reasonable doubt that caravan is the seller's to sell.

Thanks for all the information - very helpful. I did give HPI a call this afternoon and they explained that they could give me an on the spot report on any caravan that I was viewing. I'm sure that any genuine seller (even they might be unaware of a problem!) wouldn't be offended if that any cash deal was subject to a quick call to HPI.
