We never drink directly from the caravan water system! If we have tea or coffee we take the kettle to the water point. The trouble with caravan water systems is that I expect its almost impossible to completely clean the system but if you still have the taste of bleach in the water it has not been flushed sufficiently.

Same as David. We would never use the water from the system for tea or coffee. We have a 5litre bottle that we fill directly from the tap and that is what we use for our drinks and for the dogs drinks too.
------------- Live every day as if it's your last but not at risk to others :-)
We have never used the caravan systems water,we have always used a 10 litre water container for drinks and for the dog because we spend alot of time in Norfolk and the water is very hard with limescale.Ian
We use Puriclean which you can get from your local caravan shop. I think it is much the same as milton but we make sure we flush through 2 auqarolls after use and this seems to help. We don't tend to drink direct from the taps but do use it for tea and coffee (i.e boiling) and I can't see I have noticed any taste..........but having a new water filter may have helped as we change this after 30 days use. I guess like at home with our brita filter the water filter probably changes the taste of the water slightly.
PS; I take it that if you have a filter in the van that you are removing it before using the Milton or putting a clean one in after flushing through?
i use milton ,i flush a full barrel of clean water through afterwards.may try puriclean next year.we only use the water boiled to drink.fresh water for drinking is got from the tap outside or bought from the shop.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Puriclean here as well. You can also get it fom Halfrauds. But you do need to rinse it out well afterwards, the same as with any other sterilizing fluid.
I puriclean the barrel and run the system through after a lay off but during the time away we do not use tablets Unlike several of the above we do drink from the caravan tap - and have suffered no ill effects over 30 years of doing so I don't know why people have an aversion to this, the water in the house is always coming through pipes that have never been clean in eons The water itself if chlorinated to remove germs (and has extra chemicals added to remove the taste of chlorine!) so in itself it is 'clean' We are also told to only drink from the kitchen tap in the house because this is the direct feed into the house, but how many of us do just that and never drink from the en suite , bathroom, etc. Regular rising of the caravan system will be fine- or at least that is my experience
There is a major difference between household water supplies and those in a caravan as household ones are always full of water content whereas caravan systems are often left empty, or partially empty, often for quite long period which encourages the growth algae on the inside of the pipes. I am happy that you have never had a bad experience but I have read elsewhwere of someone becoming quite ill through drinking water from the caravan system. It is of course up to the individual but my advice would be always to collect fresh supplies for drinking.
I use beer line cleaner as used in pubs to clean pipes, aqua rolls etc. we then use the water for everything as we would at home. We clean the pipes out if the van has stood for more than a month between trips and never had a problem.

There will always be exceptions to any given situation. Individuals will clean their systems in a variety of ways, some no doubt better than others. It does seem odd that we get more involved with caravan systems than with household supplies. After the water companies have repaired pipes they warn us to run our taps for a period of time to flush what looks like very well polluted water out of the system. Yet we make little real fuss over this and readily return to accepting the water as 'pure'. Equally we make little fuss accepting water from a Victorian network in many cases which leak, thus by definition from a network open to the ingress of foreign matter. It would seem to be a bit like cups in restaurants and cups at home and cups in the work environment. We expect a clean cup in a restaurant but do I standards change elsewhere?
I accept your advice as being sound but, as a Biologist, I think we need to be aware of health but equally to be balanced about this. Nothing is ever 100% microbe free - even the rims of volcanoes, geysers and ice.
The advice is not to use Milton at all as it contains a harsh chemical that will cause damage to internal steel components within the hot water tank. Puriclean is the ideal clenaser as it is tested to kill Bio-film which Milton doesn't. The Puriclean tablets doesn't clean the system if you read the instructions careful enough, they only serilise the amount of water that's contained in the water barrel only and not the complete water system. I always drink from the cold water tap and I have to sterilise mine because I have to fill the dog's water bowl with fresh water twice a day. Even though it's safe for us I have to be certain that's it's safe for my dog too. Do a test yourself with two clear jars of algea bacteria and put Milton in one and Puriclean in the other and see the evidence for yourself. After 12 hours of soaking the Milton will sterilise the water but doesn't remove the harmful black bacteria breeding on the surface. Enough said.
We belong to the MAS section of CCC so we are are always on temporary sites (farmers fields). We noticed the different taste of water from site site, so we bought a Britas filter jug for the caravan after buying one for home which should remove any bits in the farmers water supply and our pipes. We notice little black bits coming out the taps initialy when filling up the system and getting all the air out but if you shower every day like we do the water gets up to 70deg which should kill any bugs and we only clean our teeth in the cold water.
70 centigrade will kill a good number of microbes but not all the main type of pasteurisation is only at 65 centigrade thus milk will still go off in the bottle/box in relatively short time even if pasteurised 100 centigrade will be a good enough to kill the majority but even then not guaranteed martinspindler, your 75 will be fahrenheit if you shower at 75 C you will burn yourself
