I am looking into buying a caravan and storing it on a site so that I can visit regularly without having to tow.  Any advice?

Hi Posh,

We have just bought our first van and store it on a small camp site in The New Forest, I have been doing work on it the past few days using electric hook up with no charge although I will insist the nice lady has some money for it!

I have been told I can stay in the van for a few days at a time whilst it's in storage, but believe it's based on the sites Licence. The New Forest are strict, so maybe other areas are a bit more leniant?

both caravan clubs do storage and will put it on site as and when required.

From your post I think you have two main options:

The first is to find a caravan site that also does storage. This will mean they will tow your van in and out of their storage side and put this on a pitch when you have booked. This is probably the cheaper of the two options but does limit just turning up when you want.

The 2nd option is to pay for a seasonal pitch where you will effectively leave your van on a pitch full time and can come and go as you please. These come in several different forms so you will need to check with each site. Some will be for a full season which will often be for upto 9 months of the year, with an agreement that you can store the van there on the other months but not use it. Others will only offer a part season (winter / summer, etc), which can vary in length and may require you to remove the van during the months you aren't paying for.

I think which option suits you will depend how often you intend to visit and if you are looking to turn up without booking. I would expect to pay a fairly high price for a full seasonal pitch in the new forest as generally this isn't a cheap area so wouldn't be surprised if these were around £2000. You will pay less for just a part season (i.e summer time) but would need to check if they can store the van outside of this period if you don't want to have to tow it.

Personally I think the biggest factor is how often you will use it. We have considered a seasonal pitch in the same area but I have calculated we would need to use it at least 90 nights a year to make it worth our while and cost effective. As we both work this is probably unlikely so for now we will stick to paying an average of £22 per night with the CC and will probably get away for around 50 nights this year (many of them in this area at the 2 CC sites).

However as your main reason for looking at this arrangement is not to tow then you may be happy to pay slightly more for the convenience of having it sited all the time.

The C&CC do have some seasonal pitches in the new forest but I suspect they may already be booked for this year.......maybe try hunting around on the net or posting on here or other forums such as caravan talk, etc

Good luck

Thank you all very much, most helpful.  Of course, I could just work on my husband and get him to agree to tow lol!
