All you can eat data with Three Mobile and use the smartphone as a wi-fi hotspot, but only if I need to use laptop or netbook otherwise it is iPad with 3G where I can't find a wi-fi connection.
The obvious beauty of the web while away is the ability to plan routes, find places to visit, supermarkets as well as out and out entertainment. With a tv connector for the iPad we can stream BBC iPlayer and Netflix etc. It has become as much a part of our caravanning as BBQ's and rain!

I use my phone as a hotspot, its called tethering.
BEWARE not all providers will allow you to use your data allowance via tethering, so you may get charged.
3 say they don't include tethering, but so far I have not been charged.
I think it depends on your phone. I use HTC and the handset has an option to allow a wi-fi connection. I then use my computer to connect wireless to my handset. All data is then free and to be fair is fast! (based on my contract)
I believe Iphone didn't have this option, although not sure of the latest model (they change so often).
When I switched broadband provider at home, there was a huge error and I went over a month with no broadband, but my phone took place of broadband and I noticed little difference in speed.
I use a dongle from 3 on a contract at £7 month and have had no problems in the south west but before I bought it I checked all the network coverage maps for the areas I wanted to go to and 3 was the best
The only time we have taken a laptop away with us was when I had to work on my tutor groups personal statements for their UCAS applications. We usually use our phones if we want to browse the internet or check emails. As my husband works with computers on a day to day basis it's nice for him to actually get away from them.
Three support tethering if you are on the One Plan. They don't permit it on PAYG and some contracts may require you to buy an add on. You can check by putting 'three mobile tethering' into Google and it will bring up Three's help page.
If you are on a Three contract already but without 'tethering', then at renewal time just tell that nice lady on 333, that because of that, your limited data package and your contract price you are mindful of changing provider; works wonders on all three scores if you just politely say it and then remain very quiet
