just posted about my battery it was charged to 12-13 on the reading on the van dial charger but a week later it was 11 which has stayed steady all week battery is 2 yrs old that says maintanence free. I have a halfords leisure charger it charged for about 5 mins then said ready and maintaining we have a digital multimeter (sealey) so we tried that it read 28.4 not sure what that means we were shown how to use it but not sure what the readings mean its set to 200 v as the guy set it for us to test the battery can anyone help thanks we are totally confused
Hi Maggie, Has the multimeter any smaller range setting than 200 volts, say 20? If not then it's not very accurate, it does however need to be set on DC volts not AC, 28.4 volts DC would be impossible to be correct.
5 mins doesn't sound like enough charge, is it one of those intelligent ones like a C-tec or an ordinary car job? The maintenance free part is that you don't have to top it up with distilled water every now and them. If you can take it to a local tyre & battery place they can put a battery tester across it and test if it holds a charge.

your meter if fully charged should read 12.7 volts,on EHU it should read 13.5 to 14 volts as it is charging. at 11 volts the battery is flat. to read.........
thanks everyone went to local tms today they tested it 100% charged but only 21% healthy saying its bad and needs replacing its only 18 month old but they said its only got a 12 month warranty as thats all they give on leisure batterys also said the side was bulged which means the batterys had it said we probably overcharged it but i dont see how as we have a halfords lesuire battery charger and it stops caharging and says ready and maintaining when its fully charged any ideas .all help is really appreciated thanks
Is the charger from Halfords definately a leisure charger? A standard car charger can (and will) destroy a leisure battery and cause internal plates to buckle, which may explain the bulge you've got in the casing.
Also, would you know what brand the battery is; I have come across one or two budget allegded 'maintenance-free' batteries still need the fluid checked and topped-up.
this is the one we have but we since found out the motor mover had a lose wire and they have now fixed it meanwhile we though it was the battey and charged it so its possible we overcharged it cos we tried it on van before and it read 12 on caravan dial we put 2 lights on in the van and it dropped to zero not lookin good
if the battery voltage drops as soon as a load is put on it then it is Kaput.
A leisure battery cannot be tested accurately with a drop test meter intended for car batteries as each work differently a leisure battery is designed to be slowly discharged to a low level & then recharged but a car battery is designed for heavy discharge & an immediate recharge
I also have the same Halfords charger & when mine reads fully charged.I found that my CTEC charger would show half charge & charge for another couple of hours before it showed full charge
this is the second battery this has happened to the other only lasted 2 yrs but we did the same thing it was showing 12 on the caravan dial looking like it was half charged so we disconected the leads and left it we then charged on the halfords charger about oct /nov then charged it again in feb/march as we have been told to make sure its topped up with charge someone told us charge every month as a flat battery will not re charge. But the caravanplace said no do it a couple of times when you lay the van up as you will overcharge it and ruin the battery which is correct .We are not sure.
As its expensive replacing it every two years has anyone had a battery for a few years and if so how do they maintain it we apprecaite all your help thanks
It has a reconditioning mode that can help desulphate the plates, and it can be left connected to the battery all the time - giving the right amount of float charge to keep the battery fully charged without over charging.
Our battery is well over 2 years old and performs like new.
not well know fact is a flat battery can freeze if it goes really flat when stood in storage.this could explain the bulge.water expands 8 to 1 when frozen.overheating can cause same fault.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
thanks for that info that could of well hapened as it was bad winter this year also al do you leave your battery on charge all winter with this smart charger or just charge it occassionally
I left it on and forgot about it for a couple of months, then needed it for another battery, so it had a rest for a while, after that it was probably on charge for 6 weeks before it went back to the 'van.
The charger cuts in and out on its own to keep the battery fully topped up and the voltage is high enough to stop the battery plates sulphating but at a very low power, so it won't fry the battery. The reconditioning charge helps the battery accept a bigger proportion of its charge (this can reduce with age and sulphation) so you end up with more bang for your buck too!
this is the onewe have we took it back to halfords and got it changed as it charged for 4 soild days and never went to mainting like the other one did they said it might have been faulty althogh that dont help us much didnt know you could leave them on all that time but we are going to fetch it indoors under the stair next year in case of frost soda law you always find out once you goosed tha battery thanks everyone for all your help
The reconditioning function that our charger has was what sold me on it, as we already had the present 110ah battery (it came with our previous 'van) and thought we would need a good charger, whether this one survived or not. It did, and that is 2 years ago now. I like the way it tells you the voltage its charging at, and the state of charge too.
Personally I wouldn't trust a 'leisure' charger from Halfords. You ideally need a proper smart-charger that will condition the battery properly and while there are plenty available (including from Ring etc), you simply can't go wrong with a CTec leisure battery smart-charger.
These are priced slightly higher but they are absolutely top notch and will keep your battery in a better condition; given the investment cost of the battery, I don't see the advantage of getting a cheapo charger.
I have the CTek MXS5 which is favourably priced and rated for leisure batteries upto 165Ah (most caravan batteries are between 85 to 110Ah).
See here for example.
