With the whole country now Digital .... how effective are these with the Digital TV Signals?
The reason I ask is that I see lots of caravans with an Omni-directional - but having another aerial mounted on a pole in addition ...... which kind of defeats the idea of a built-in aerial.
People say that the directional aerials are much better from their experience and after reading about this topic recently in the Caravan Handbook by John Wickersham they also confirm that directional aerials are much better.
The reason you see many vans with both (Mine included) is that thousands of caravans were produced with the Status omni directional ariel factory fitted as standard. However, these wer found to be somewhat lacking in performance in anything other than very strong signal areas. Consequently many owners use a Yagi directional which can be turned to focus the available signal. Must say tho, the later directional Status is a vast improvement on the old omni........Mick
Our van came with a Status omni-directional. I prefer to think of it as a non-directional, it is so poor. Now have an aerial on a mast on the jockey wheel - cheap and effective.
Ours is the fixed status aerial (not sure of the model Dohhh) but in almost 5 years we have only had problems at one site and that was Lime tree park n/r Buxton but to be fair we were practically under the viaduct lol other than that we cant moan

I smile besause I have'nt a clue whats going on... appreciate everything in life especially your friends...
the one we have turns in ever direction and all done inside the van at the same time you raise/lower it and touch wood we must not have hit a bad reception area yet
We also have the omni sat factory fitted arial and noticed even in a strong signal area the picture is perfect but since going digital the sound goes out of sync to the picture. So now prefer to use satellite dish whenever possible.
I had a Freedom & later a Sterckemann and the arials on these were great but then the 2 vans I had after were rubbish. I now use a directional on a pole
My status is ok but needs the amp on at all times. Have yet to use my aerial on the pole. Bought the pole as standby because the status does not like trees.
Really depends on the signal strength in the area - had times when the omni found nothing, other times we've had all the freeview channels you can get.
But generally, you're better of with a seperate, directional one.

I had an old omni one on one of my caravans when the north west went digital and it was brilliant at a site 15 mins away from me, picked up the digi north west signal better than the analogue midlands one which it used to get at that site before the switch.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.
We had the old status omni on our old van I think it was the 330 what a load of rubbish I could get a better picture on a piece of wire on a stick but our new van has the new status 530 and I have to say its brillant we get a good picture no matter ware we are.Ian
I have a factory fitted 'flying saucer' not the movable one and find reception very good. Way better than when it was analogue. On most sites now I can get all the freeview channels.
