A leisure battery is used for various reasons but the two main reasons are to operate your 12 volt water pump and the 12 volt lighting. Some caravans have what is called an electric flush toilet which is also operated by means of a 12 volt system. Some caravans also have a motor mover fitted which definitely can't be operated without the use of a leisure battery.

Our campervan had a car battery to work the car stuff. The leisure under my passenger seat worked all the stuff inside  the leisure side of it. .fridge, water pump lights etc. and as Tango says above.

Now we have an fc we have a mover and a topped up leisure battery to use it.

You will have lights, fridge etc. that can run on 12V battery power - when caravan is not connected to EHU [Electric hook up]. Often a motor mover is the main user of a leisure battery.

If you think of a campervan.

One battery is for the main car engine. The other is the leisure battery and is used to get the fridge, water pump, lights etc going so they do not drain the main one.

We have a folding camper. We have a leisure battery. If we wanted to go into a field wanted all the above to work the electric to run them comes from the battery, through the zig unit and that gives us the power to run them. Without  running  down the car battery.

We can charge the battery via the cable that we plug in on site and the charger inside the fc switched on will keep the battery charged up. Leisure = leisure things

You will get more info from others when they come on I am sure.

The fridge can't be operated from the leisure battery, it's either gas or 240 volt mains that runs the fridge. It's only 12 volts power when it comes via the towcar electrics when the trailer is in tow.

If it's any consolation to you it may be advisable to buy the book the 'Caravanning Handbook' by John Wickersham as it explains about everything you need to know about caravanning in general. Although I have the first edition which was published in 2002, the link below is for the revised second edition which was published in 2010.

leisure  batteries are made to be used a lot between charges   so you can use it until it gets quite low then recharge it  eg on a non ehu site      'normal' car batteries are built to be charged while being used so are not as good as leisure battries for caravan/boat use

Your research should involve going around as many caravan dealerships as you can just wandering in and out of different vans. Apart from the sheer joy of just being nosey, it will help you focus on the kind of layout that will best suit what you want out of caravanning.

Get yourself down to the South & West Wales Caravan & Motorhome Show which is held on the 11th, 12th & 13th May on the United Counties Showground, Carmarthen. Great day out and sure to get you well into the mood

Phil
