With caravan friendly Sat Navs so expensive, would it not be a good idea to use this forum to compile a list of roads and routes to avoid when towing? ie. steep hills, tight bends, narrow roads etc. Regards John.

Whilst I agree with the idea my concern is what we individually feel is 'difficult'. I say this having been worried that going to a particular French site would be a nightmare as the immediate access road was described in the CC's European touring guide as "steep and could be a problem". Arriving we both wondered what the hell could the contributor have been towing with, indeed there was a hill but the slope was a trivial one that anything but an absurd mismatch would cope with without even noticing it.

i just use the good old map in the car finding the way etc is all part of the trip for me i have a tom tom one and got lost more with it than without
same here , some of the routes it comes out with are ridiculous. got away with a few shockers solo where id have really struggled to get through with van on tow.
tend to use it only as a last resort now.

Don't go towing up Porlock Hill!
Been there done that got the t-shirt and had absolutely no problem at all.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
We use the Truckers road atlas. It warns of narrow roads etc. Site directions can be helpful.
Google Streetviw is invaluable.
The most use we get from our satnav is estimating the arrival time.
I use a Tom Tom one but set the mph. to 56 it then thinks you are a lorry apart from Wales when you have to use common sence.,if it looks wrong carry on and let it find a new route.
Porlock hill is a definate NO NO for caravans and large trailers, they are Banned anyway, and you risk getting a fine for even trying it, the same goes for Sutton bank in North Yorkshire.
You may get away with a beefy engined car and a small luggage type camping trailer up Porlock, but its much to steep and winding for anything larger.
Hardknot and Wrynose pass in Cumbria are also NO NOs for towing through, very steep, windling and very narrow single track with passing places and blind bends.

I agree with Madtrucker. Google street view for me. I have just come back from a 5 week trip to Benidorm. I had street viewed all my stopovers and some spare ones, no problems. Then got sat nav (tomtom via120) to take me there. I had to do some of the last bits remembering what I saw on street view as sat nav only takes you close on occaisions. Maps as backup, not used much. I did the same for british sites last year and have been checking out our next trip. I don't like single track roads. Often good advice on UKcampsite reviews.
