We have a small round steel plate secured to the front of the van for mounting.

The aerial in the link has a magnetic base so where do you actually locate it as the caravan front and sides are manufactured from non magnetic material?

This answer says it all. Omni aerials have very poor gain but will work in a strong signal area, and people really don`t realise how HUGE is the difference in signal levels available throughout the country. So if you`re pitched somewhere which just happens to be in a strong signal area you`ll think your Omni aerial is great, any where else and they`re useless.

Ane there isn`t any such thing as a "Digital Aerial", all aerials will pick up an analogue and digital signal of the same signal power equally well

There`s either something wrong with your house aerial (or cabling) or, on the other hand, you`re getting excessive signal from it which can be just as much of a problem as insufficient signal. No omnidirectional aerial will work better than a directional aerial, it`s physically impossible. And a low gain aerial with an amplifier will not perform as well as a higher gain aerial without an amplifier, that too is impossible.

More likely your caravan is in a strong area and your house in a weak signal area. If you get a decent signal from an Omni aerial all you`re really saying is you`re situated in a strong signal area.
