I guess some 4X4`s arent all that beefy. Honda CR4 (some are 2 WD), LR Freelander etc. They`re stil a tad bigger than my Berlingo . . . .

DaveCoaches - My god you must be a really unlucky bloke I have driven for nearly 40 years and as part of my job do quite a lot of miles. In the whole of my life I have never seen a caravan overturned = just a numpty towing a trailered beetle once with a very small car overturned on the M6. I tried to find some gov. data on this but to no avail. So you have seen 3 and all land rovers, now there must be hundreds of thousands of vehicle accidents per year and there must be a fraction of a percentage involving caravans so just a few a year and probably most in summer and you seen 3 of them WOW how unlucky percentage wise.

I have only seen one caravan in bits at the side of the road. A lot of years ago.

Doesn't matter what they are towing or towing with - if they are speeding they are speeding - idiots drive all types of cars
Only time i have an issue with certain types of 4x4 drivers is those who ramp up on te pavement outside schools and those who think they can drive faster than anyone else in snow - (since when does 4x4 traction help you stop or steer - winter tyres do - 4x4 doesn't?) ;)

DaveCoaches
can see where you were coming from though Peterws. I have seen three caravans overturn on the motor way. All three were towed by Land Rover Discoveries and were fairly new caravans with stabilisers. While it would be wrong to tar all 4x4 drivers with the same brush, there are a few out there that think they are invincible because they have a 4x4. Raising the speed limit will just allow them to have their accident a little earlier.
---------------------------------------------------
Again its being a bit general DaveCoaches, 'fairly new vans with stabilisers' , I would be confident saying that they may have had stabilisers, but were they equipped with the BPW IDC system ot the Alko Equivalent, if you read the blurb on these systems, I would guess the vans were not euippped with these systems which are now being fitted as standard to many new vans. Also the vans you saw overturn on the motorway, the accidents could have been caused by many other problems, i.e. incorrect unloading causing handling problems, noseweight or blowout etc. I dont think being towed by Land Rover Discoveries had anything to do with it, in fact they are one of the best towcars on the market!

-------------------------------------------------
Wow.... there is sure some anti 4x4 feeling out there... I live quite close to two schools Sunshinetours and I would say generally those who ramp up on pavements, from what I see in the mornings is not just the 4x4's but any type of car driven by an inconsiderate drivers.
Just to correct your second point, I drive a 4WD Audi equipped with Quattro drive and yes that does help you steer in snow as it has an intelligent drive system, which puts power to the wheels that have traction as needed. I believe there are other makes out there with similar type systems.
Even with this system no sensible person would drive fast on snow, however I have seen many non 4x4 cars think they can drive fast on snow....they just cant stop!!!
One last point when there is heavy snow, how many 4WD's do you see off the road in hedgrows and ditches as opposed to two wheel drive cars?
I feel I have to defend 4x4's as I have one use it for towing and personal solo driving. I also drive about 30K a year in my company vehicle which is a Passat CC Coupe, a lovely car but I would rather drive the 4WD any time.

They wouldn't have had ATC or the BPW equivalent as it was not that recent. I am not saying Land Rovers are a bad towcar either, but because they are a good tow car then it could be the idiots like them as they feel invincible. There are of course a majority of people towing with Discoveries that are sensible I hasten to add.
All three were on motorways, 2 on the M4 and one on the M6. The one on the M6 overtook me not long before. I was doing 70 (solo) and he past me as if I was stood still. the two on the M4 I saw while I was a delivery driver up down the Wales length of the M4 all day. I was on my way to Blackpool with the family for a weekend when I saw the one on the M6.

It all boils down to the fact that some people have to drive fast everywhere
Whether its a small hatchback a 4x4 towing a caravan or solo
On motorways A roads or housing estates
You have that type of person with the mentality of get out my way here i come,
Its the rest of us who have to think for them

i think we should all be driving v8 4x4s. it would be much more enjoyable... and we should also up the speed to 90mph when solo.. sod the law.. sod the do gooders.. and the green party....make fuel 50p a gallon...and make beans and cuscus £10 an ounce....also bring on global warming so we can feel warm in summer.................or is it just me

60 is generally fast enough. Our motorways are far too busy to increase the limit. I don't think the stopping distances would be enough if the limit was increased. In fact under wet weather conditions I would reduce the limit.
The only time I would think that it's safe to increase the limit would possibly be during the night when there is less traffic.
However, on single carriageways I agree with Arc Stsrems post, I tend to keep up with the traffic within reason, but keeping a safe distance when the vehicle in front.
Driving solo I would be in agreement with increasing the speed limit under dry conditions on certain stretches on motorways. The M180 in Lincolnshire is always empty.
