just pressed the check lights and it doesnt look like the heater has water as the level gauge shows up red, so presume its a fail safe thats why the heater is tripping out this is for hot water i have water at the taps on hot, which i thought primed the cylinder ??

chill, its the daytime, lots of folk are at work...
(I am actually, but hey ho!!)
You dont say what type of water heater you have, but in general it as follows:

Firstly, fill your water barrel/on board tank /whatever.
Check that the drain plug is in place (bottom left of the cowl outside) or that the drain tap is closed (under the van where the heater is) Turn on the hot tap, it will take a a while, but your pump will run, and fill the hot water tank. (put your hand under the tap, you might feel a small draught as it pushes the air out of the system)
wait until you have a steady stream or water, not spitting/gurgling to make sure the tank is full.

switch on the tank heating (I cant comment further on this, if you post a pic or let us know the model of your heater it might help a little.

Im not sure of your level guage, are youy sure its for the hot water, it would be usual for an onboard tank to have a level guage, but not the hot water, as this needs to be full all the time.

what exactly are you turning on? are there 3 lights on it,
does it look like this?

if so, this is for gas contorl, the red light means it has not lit, (is your gas turned on)
240V heating is usually somwhere else, depending on the age of your van, it could be a switch on the control panel, or just a switch in the side of a panel somwhere (mine is)

another up date the check gauge refers to the onboard water tank, so is not relevent to my problem, looks like a visit to the workshop as no one has come up with an answer as to where to start.

The external pump may fill the water tank, the heater etc then takes its feed from this tank.

We had an Abbey GTS which worked that way, only downside was the internal tank needed to be flushed and cleaned regularly-we used Milton tablets.

It had a gauge for the external tank-well red green yellow LEDs!
