We have a dorema awning that came with our van.  We tried to put it up for the first time last week and spent hours.  It went up in a fashion but looked very lopsided and one corner looked horrendous.  The main problem seemed to be with the quick lock pads.  They attached to the awning with little problem but we found it almost impossible to get the poles attached to them.  The poles have hooks on the end and impossible to get through the holes in the pads (well for us anyway).  Can anybody who has these pads tell me if there's a knack to it.

Did you keep the poles bent whilst trying to put the hook in??

Not sure what you mean by bent (sorry).  We tried to put them in before we attached them to the upright ones if that makes any sense.  When the pads are in place the rubber bit is against the caravan so there is nowhere for the hook to go.  I think in the end we took the pads off, hooked the pole in (kind of) and then attached the pads onto the awning.  I don't think that was the right procedure.  Reading this back I appreciate this prob makes little sense to anybody reading it.

We have a Dorema awning and our fittings are identical to yours and we don't have any problem at all, in fact I think they are a good design actually to stop the poles falling out and banging in to the side of the caravan putting permanent dents in the side. What you have to do is keep the pole in the same direction as the pad then push the pole towards the caravan and hook the end into the slot then pull the pole back up again. This is done so that when the hook is in place it won't fall out unless you are careless in handling the poles properly. The pole should then spin so the hook remains in place whilst you fit the adjacent poles. You don't state where you reside otherwise it would be quicker to show you.

Does your caravan have what they call a boat roof? If it has then there is a downward slope from the rear to the front so the front is not the same height as the back and this can make the awning look a bit unusual.

I have got one of those Dorema diagrams michael but I think they are struggling more to attach the poles with the hooks in to the slots on the locking pads. Getting the awning to look right comes with experience but it also depends on how level the ground is too.

Thanks for all the help and tips. Yep its def the hooks that are getting the better of us. Will try putting them in from the sides - prob the only thing we didnt try. Hopefully there'll be somebody on site with these pads and can show us where we are going wrong.

We hold the poles vertically to hook them in and then lift them up to attach to the corresponding roof poles. Find them much better than either the rubber suckers or having brackets attached to the van.
