Used our caravan last week and on the way going we had the awning on the axle, but owning to the awning being rubbish (got it with the van and only just opened it) we left at beside the bins, but on the way home the caravan seemed to bounce alot. I wondered was the van too light or tyre pressure, but not sure of either.

hi, sounds as if the weight was to light as you done correct on outward trip by putting awnning over axle as they do weigh a lot, next time out just put heavy gear on floor over axle and see how things go from there.

Maybe wrong tire pressure.Another thing people dont do is jack the van up to relive the suspension as its a rubber coil.If you look at a new van it sits high over the wheel but, as the years go by the body gets lower to the wheel hence a slight lack of suspension.

possibly to light is as bad as too heavy.nothing to hold it down so each bump is felt.could be the tyres are over pressurised.i think the first one.

If the van is too light and the stuff we have in is all we are taking, how do we make it heavier (this sounds a stupid question!.) Pick up a hitchhiker lol. no seriously what would I do?

When we had out lunar zenith, we had to really load that up, or it bounced all over the show, we had the nose weight right, tyres all ok but goodness me that van used to bounce, so everything went in it. Even if we wernt going to use the awning, it always came along for the ride. The heavier it was the better it was to tow.

A friend of ours recently had a similiar problem with his van but over came it by filling his water carriers up. He placed cling film over the filler before screwing the caps back on, then wedged them in over his axle. This was only a temperary solution on a couple of short trips, but it did the job.

HI, just wanted to point out that your awning would have made very little decernable diference to the ride of the van, unless is was 100kg or something ridculous.

Its is more likely to be a tyre issue.

A lot of vans are sold with car tyres fitted by the owner to get a quick sale.

Most car tyres cannot cope with the weight on a single axle van, not true for a twin axle, in most situations they are car tyres or radials as the weight is divided by 4.

The problem being that if a car tyre is pumped to what could be a single axle tyre pressure, say 60psi, it is far over its design pressure. Hence would make it bouncy.
