Hi Folks

l suppose like me you may use a route planner of the web to plan main summer hols,l have in the past used RAC,AA and multimap sites, enter home postcode and destination post code each come out with exactly same route but the could be a difference of upto 5 mile between websites,

What l would like to know is the a website for routeplanning were you can enter information that you are towing a caravan/trailer and restricted to lower speed limits, so giving you info on how long it would take to complete the journey. this would help if you have to be at ferry terminal at a certain time.

l do have a satnav but me being of the old school l still use a road atlas, and also a ordnance survey map of the area we spend our summer hols.

I usually use Google Earth and enter the post codes from the start location to the destination. You can use the little man on the right, drag him down and see exactly what the sign posts indicate along with the A & B road numbers plus you can also see if any of the roads are narrow or not and which are to be avoided. This is when the map comes in handy as a secondary back up. What these route planners don't account for is a towing vehicle so I feel more confident by doing my own version of a route planner. It has always worked for me but like I say, I always use a map as guidance and a sat-nav as a very final option which I haven't had to use up to yet.

Yes, Via Michelin has a tick-box for trailer in the options section on the car tab...

This is very informative as I've never heard of the via Michelin website. I will have to take a look as it actually sounds like a good option for a route planner.

Have justed been on via michelin it seems a very good site, but l can't make out the route l selected to the Isle of Wight is 259 miles and on the RAC site exactly same route mileage 265 discrepency of 6 miles, l know its only small amount of miles but it could make a difference. l wonder if they are using different software?

I too use google maps, usually gives you several routes to choose from

why not take the longest the only thing that could happen is you will be a bit early

I've tried the Via Michelin website and to be quite honest I don't think much to it at all. It can't even detect the correct location of our caravan storage site when you enter the post code so it's failed before I've even started the journey.

But it must be close, you know where your storage is so not really an issue. It's the ability to select a caravan that's the plus point. I've always found the routes good.

I use this one quite often. If you click on the "Advanced" button & scroll down to "Car journey details"
you can set the max speed to 60mph and tick "Avoid" "Roads with restricted access".

The one detail I didn't like was when it told me that I'm going to use £72 in petrol each way on our next trip.

P.S. What happens if you plug that postcode into Google Earth?    
It might be the post code that's dodgy & not Via Michelin.
The postcode where our van is stored seems to cover the whole industrial estate - & that's a big area.

I always use Via michelin or Mappy for route planning as the allow you to add a caravan & different types of tug such as small car,sedan,luxury ect for fuel costing & they allow you to choose several different types of route,such as quickest,non toll motorway,scenic,or economic. but the use of these mapsites need to be practised on as there are many other functions that are not immediately obvious. the route map picture can be enlarged & zoomed in on in order to get a better look at the route & you can choose between mapping view & satellite view with or without the written guide & maps can be printed out in sections or just the main junctions.
so please do not be dismissive of them to quickly

We used via Michelin for a trip around europe last year, all worked out extremely well, no low bridges or very nsrrow roads.
