Hi Everyone,we have just returned from a great jubilee bank holiday at Strid Wood CC and couldnt help noticing that a lot of folk are now using the new lightweight gas.
So this query is aimed at all you clever people out there who are clued up on the subject.
Our caravan is equipped with the 'blue bottle'-Butane and have never had any problems with it (touching wood), so do you think there would be any advantage in swapping over, and if so,what would we need to do,
You will need one of these and then it's a trip to your local Calor dealer to change you bottle over. Simples

I use the Calor Propane lightweight cylinders for three reasons. Firstly, the noseweight on my caravan should be no more than 75kgs. so by changing to cylinders half the weight has helped me to achieve this. Secondly, the lightweight cylinders have a fixed gauge on the top with a green and red band so it's an indication as to how much gas you have remaining. Thirdly, as we sometimes go out in the winter months, Propane will function down to around -30 degrees Celcius whereas Butane won't and once it reaches about +3 degrees will fail to operate effectively which means problems with cooking and heating especially if we are not on electric hook up. If you do change from Butane to Propane you will need to change the regulator as they operate on different pressures but it's an easy task to do. I use the handwheel type regulator which requires no spanner to tighten up as it has a rubber insert that seals better inside the thread.
We exchanged our blue bottles for Calorlite at Go Outdoors as they were the cheapest and changed the regultor on the hose in the locker. We did this to help with weight and to help with cold weather caravanning.
They won't except the smaller bottles in exchange for the light weight (the will for normal weight ones), apparently due to a shortage of light weight. Don't suppose ths would be an issue fr most folk but we got caught out when trying to swap a spare bottle.
hi we are very new to caravaning and our van is a elddis xplore 302 we want to change from a 7k butane bottle to a 6k propane bottle, on the link about the pigtail it said if your regulator is fixed you can use it, how do you know if you got a fixed regulator? because on the butane bottle we have to push what i thought is the regulator on the bottle but also there what looks like a fixed regulator with a little yellow on/of clip in the middle between where the two gas bottle goes, what do i need to buy a propane regulator or a pig tail?
You need a pigtail to connect from the fixed regulator to the propane bottle which has a screw connection rather than the clip on connection which the butane uses.

Tango, this sounds interesting, I always have problems changing the spanner version - it's just difficult and awkward! Do you have a link where I could get one from? Sounds like just the job I need. Already on the lightweight propane. Thanks.

Your present butane bottle will have a pigtail with 21mm clip fitting. For Calor lite propane you need pigtail with POL fitting(as in link, post2), to go on your existing regulator fixed to bulkhead which can be used for both butane & propane.
