Hi and welcome to the forum. Which model 'Alko' stabiliser hitch do you have, is it the side handle or top handle? The link below shows the side handle model which is the 'Alko' 1300 and the second one down is the 'Alko' 3004 model.

Do you have a proper 'Alko' towball fitted or is it a standard towball?

Okay, so you have the right towball and you have replaced the friction pads and you still have the problem. Lift up and lower the big red handle on the hitch and feel inside and I think there should be a fork that when you press down on the lever it compresses the friction pads either side on to the towball. It appears that it is something to do with this fork mechanism that's causing the problem as once the red handle is locked down is should remain permanently locked. If it isn't then there's a possibility that the stabiliser isn't working effectively even though the small black handle has connected. If you need any further advice it may be well to contact 'Alko' customer services as they should be able to guide you whether the stabiliser needs replacing or if it can be repaired.
