Hi folks first post on your site is a question that I have been a googling with no success. My caravan hooks up fine but as I travel the red handle on the Alko system raises almost fully up so rendering it useless and not doing its duty, and the man hitch stays in firmly in place..I have replaced the two round pads in hope that they may be the problem with no luck so any advice would be gratefully received!
Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to the forum. Which model 'Alko' stabiliser hitch do you have, is it the side handle or top handle? The link below shows the side handle model which is the 'Alko' 1300 and the second one down is the 'Alko' 3004 model.

Are you winding the round dial clockwise on to the ball first before you fully lock the lever down?

Mine is a aks 2004, where would I see the round dial? When connecting my van after the hitch is locked down I then snap down the anti snake... never found a round dial to turn clockwise.

I think we got a bit crossed wired here because when you said the top type I though you meant the same as the one in the top link which I posted and not the bottom one. So the type you have is identical to the one in the bottom link then and if it is then you don't have a dial as this is only on the 1300 which is shown in the top link, so forget about the dial as it's not featured on the 2004 model.

So basically then, the small black lever can be lifted to connect to the towball and hitch up successfully but the big red handle is failing to lock down. Is this right?

Sorry about that.... Entertaining though! The small handle locks down fine and the van is safe to tow, the red handle feels as if it locks down but lifts during traveling

Do you have a proper 'Alko' towball fitted or is it a standard towball?

Okay, so you have the right towball and you have replaced the friction pads and you still have the problem. Lift up and lower the big red handle on the hitch and feel inside and I think there should be a fork that when you press down on the lever it compresses the friction pads either side on to the towball. It appears that it is something to do with this fork mechanism that's causing the problem as once the red handle is locked down is should remain permanently locked. If it isn't then there's a possibility that the stabiliser isn't working effectively even though the small black handle has connected. If you need any further advice it may be well to contact 'Alko' customer services as they should be able to guide you whether the stabiliser needs replacing or if it can be repaired. You can contact then here with your query.

You don't have a 4x4 with a spare wheel on the back that could be knocking the lever as you go round a corner do you?
