prob been covered loads befor, but im in a right pickle, we are on sighted on a site with no EHU and want to beable to leave our batteries there all time, so need some advise on solar pls, want something that will give enough power to a 110 battery and we run all van on it and few hours off TV, we are only there 3/4 days a week, so battery will be on all time we away from site ?????????
It will depend on the time of year that you are using the caravan and the positioning of the panel. In the winter time the amount of power you get from a panel is much reduced and unless you can position the panel at an optimum angle to the sun you will also loose efficiency. A worst case example would be a panel laying flat on a roof in the winter months as there are few hours of light and the angle to the sun is very acute. best case scenario would be in summer with the panel being adjusted frequently to face the sun directly.
In good light conditions an 80W panel should be fine but increasing the size above that would involve diminishing returns as much of the time the panel will not be able to get all of the power it produces into the battery. In the winter I would seriously consider having two 80W panels and two 110Ah batteries if I was going to use the caravan for more than 3 or 4 days at a time.
The above are just my thoughts on the matter and others may have completely different ideas. In general with PV you need to attack the problem from both sides ie generating power and reducing consumption. Modern LED back lit TV's consume much less power than those TV's of only 4 or 5 years ago and LED lighting will make massive cuts in your power requirements compared with florescent tubes and halogen lamps. another area to avoid if possible is the use of inverters to power electrical devices such as PC's etc as they have a poor efficiency and in may cases you are using the inverter to output 240V only for it to be brought back down to 12V or 5V by the device. Most phones, laptops, tablets and hand held devices can work happily off 12V with the correct cables and adaptors/regulators.

Have a look at a portable solar panel generator. It will give you 240v AC so you can plug it in to the caravan EHU point. It will charge your leisure battery and allow you to watch TV or run a laptop.
You can buy a self contained unit - it looks like a briefcase, with a solar panel on the outside but contains a battery and inverter, so will give you 240V even after the sun has gone down. It will run a laptop for about 1.5 days on a single charge, and will probably cost you the same as a simple 12V charging panel. It's portable too.
I recently bought one and they are great.
Generate Green sell them - 01452 227022 - check ebay too.
Birder's detailed reply sums it up, the consumption is dependant on your needs and equipment.
Personally, I have a single 60w panel that does the job for us very well. All lighting is LED, plus I have a low consumption LED TV. The panel keeps our battery running well for rally use and the odd occassion I've gone 4-5 days off EHU.
Of course, the panel will charge your battery while you're off site too (if I've read post right, you're on a seasonal pitch are you?), that is assuming you can secure it for use while off site.
Personally I'd consider an 80w panel kit and see how you get on (I was given this 60w panel) as you can always add to it if necessary, plus better to get a decent panel from the outset as opposed to finding you've bought one that struggles with your needs.
thx G7ACU we are season site with NO EHU so need some way of charging batteries with out bringing them home all time, we stay on site 2/4 days through summer but not altogether we have a break inbetween days ??
we rally a lot and used to use a generator but hated using it due to the noise, we have invested in a 60w solar panel from a guy near Drax. It included 5 meters of cable and the regulator. It works even when it's overcast. We use it to charge our 85amph battery. Off this we run our lights (some we have changed to LEDs as they are more energy efficient for the battery); our water pump and our 12v tv (watch it for a couple of hours a day). It was the best price we could find at the time, £110. If you want more info let me know

this is the one we got, I just messaged the guy and we picked it up from his house. Also got a stand for it as hubby had read somewhere that roof mounting the panel meant that the panel didn't reach it's best charging levels (or summat to that effect)

we have just got back from 10 days with no EHU we only use the 110 batter for the water pump and lights just the spot lightsin an evening and the awaning light for an hour the battery lasted to our suprise but were of to scotland for 12 days and want to have something to top it up I have seen some quite cheep pannles on ebay and wondred to you leave the pannel attached to the battery all day even 2 when its in use weight means we cant carry a second battery or genaratour but most of our camping without EHU. so if a cheep pannel works for us that would be fab
the panel is left attached to the battery for the whole of our stay, as it starts charging from the moment it gets daylight till the sun has gone down. When in direct sunlight the needle on our charger shoots up to the same position as when the van is on hookup so we're more than happy with our panel

thanks i think it sounds just what we need its just a bit of extra security we can allway take the battery out and theres a place to charge them but if we dont have to all the better
We use a 40watt panel all the time we are away in the caravan it provides all the power we need only used ehu twice in the last 6 years (included in the pitch fee ) I put our panel on the roof when we arrive and I don't touch it again unroll we pack up to come home I know it would be more efficient if I angled the panel to follow the sun but it works well enough during the summer months we did manage 18 days without the panel and no ehu without any problems
The price of solar panels has really come down recently. The USA have slapped an enormous import duty on Chinese panel. I recently bought one from Ebay from Germany a seller called (easy)bay 130w bid on it Thurday night delivered on the following Monday. If we have any decent weather it will put it on the roof.
