What is considered a 'bad' damp reading? We have had our caravan serviced, 2009 sterling, to be told it has 20-50% damp on the off side front corner. We were hoping to trade it in in the next month or so, but how will this effect us doing this?

If it's a 2009 model then it should be under warranty, a normal reading should be no more than 15%.

  • Readings between (0-15%) no cause for concern
  • Readings between (15-20%) dealer to make a note of these readings and re-check at next service.
  • Readings between (20-24%) possible early signs of ingress, look for tangible evidence or ask for a re-check.
  • Readings between (25-30%) moisture evident, remedial work required; may not need stripdown unless surface damage (staining, pimpling, and softness) is apparent. (There is a risk of wallboard deterioration due to retained moisture in the structure if resealed only.)
  • Reading (31 % and above) structural damage is occurring, deterioration inevitable. a full stripdown of the affected area is required.

Ive got a damp detector and it has 4 lights, and on two sections of our van, the first light, lights up would that be clased as 0-15% does anyone know?

The damp tester came from towsure, and it tells you to test it on your hand, and I get the same first light up when testing it in the palm of my hand.

    Thanks

sound fine to me.do not test on the window rubbers as you get a high reading.

The Dealer you part ex it in will knock a substantial amount off the value.

But then, of course, not tell the next buyer anything about it - they love damp caravans as they make a HUGE profit on them.

And, of course, damp is exempt from the warranty ..... they win, win, win!

We have a 2006 Swift which had a six year water ingress warranty, we swapped this into our name when we bought the van in 2009.  Last year had damp on the rear wall so had this fixed under said warranty.  I'd look into that before trading the van in and getting a much reduced price from the dealer.    Your van should have a similar warranty, if the annual service is up to date, as Swift/Sterling are the same group?
