Firstly, I hope you are all enjoying the weekend! Now, I have a smelly portaloo. On Friday I filled it up with Zoflora to try and kill this putrid smell, yet the smell has over powered the zoflora.

It's not the kind of smell you'd expect from a loo but rather a damp rotten smell.

Should I just bin it or is there a cure that someone knows about.

Bleach should kill the smell 1/2 pint and fill with water and leave 3 day and that should ok

Will the bleach not rot the seals?

Thetford do a toilet cassette tank cleaner. Would that be worth a try?

Could you make sure it's dry and then leave some bicarbonate or cat litter in it, and wrap in a bin bag for a few days, both bicarbonate and cat litter are fantastic at absorbing smell especially cat litter, I restore vintage teddies and dolls, and sometimes they come to me smelling damp and smoky ect, I leave them in a bag of cat litter for a week and when removed no smells.

As Homebird says try the Thetford tank cleaner. It is not the cheapest stuff about but it works well and unlike some of the ideas above it does not harm the seals and it removes the cause of the smell rather than the smell itself. Toilets that are used a lot get a build up of scale in the holding tanks that provides a breeding ground for bacteria that create the smell. The Thetford tank cleaner removes the scale and thus the bacteria have nowhere to live and therefore no smell from tank.

I would have to wonder why it smells. It seems strange.

I leave them in a bag of cat litter for a week and when removed no smells.

I third the Thetford tank cleaner suggestion

My cassette loo has dried feaces in it when I forst got the caravan. The Thetford cleaner left it clean and smell free and it was a lot cheaper than a new cassette.

I read this message this morning. I had my first trip away recently in my new caravan and emptying the cassette was a bit more unpleasant than normal. I puchased the thetford cleaner but had not yet used it.

Anyway, I gave it a go today, it states to leave it for 16 hours, so will let you know the results tomorrow, Crankyhorse has filled me with confidence that it will be a success.

Results are: It removed most of it, but a couple of stubborn spots still remaining. Have only used a third of the bottle so will do it again after we have been away again. A thumbs up from me, and at a fraction of the cost of a new cassette.

Just a quick update, problem solved! The loo came with the van when we bought it, so am guessing it was just stagnent water which caused the smell to stick to the walls.

Put a whole bottle of Zoflora in the waste tank, filled with warm water and left outside with the lid off so it could breathe for a few days

Smell is gone and it now smells of flowers! Hope it lasts, but am still going to treat it again with the cleaner mentioned above.
