Does anyone know when new caravans changed from 2 electric plugs to 1 plug... I have just purchased a new car and about to have tow bar fitted so thinking do I go for new 1 plug or old 2 plug electrics...
As I am also about to start looking for a newer caravan if I know what year 1 plugs started it may guide me which way to go... I cant afford a brand new caravan as weel as the new car
Whichever plugs you have on your van (two 12-pin plugs or one 13-pin plug) you can buy an adapter to convert them to match the sockets on the car. So I don't think it really matters. For example:
Go for a single plug 13 pin and use an adaptor, it easier than doing it the other way round (and cheaper) a new car often has a plug for the 13pin wiring
it varies between manufacturers....just depends when they adopted it.
i would do as markh1 suggests....get the single 13pin, and if you need it, get an adapter.
this is what we do...13pin on car.... caravan has 13pin and boat on 7 pin....just use an adapter which cost about £3 on E-of-bay.
just wish I could tow both at the same time !
I agree go for the new single plug on your car. I bought a very neat adaptor to fit to my old Clubman. This is now sitting in my garage redundant as we then changed the caravan, so if anyone needs one...!
Caravans made after Sept 2008 should have 13pin plugs. Best idea would be to get a 13pin socket fitted to your car & if you buy an earlier caravan have a 13pin plug put onto the 2 cables, 13pin plugs that can have 2 cables fitted into them are available. Double adaptors are cumbersome & should only be regarded as a temporary solution.

Because its untidy, looks a mess & its likely to end up dragging along the ground unless some thought is given to preventing it. Twin plug caravan into single socket car is somewhat worse than 'tother way round admittedly, but why have more connections than you need?

Agree, but in addition to Tentz explanation of them being cumbersome, additional un-necessary connectors give more chance of future electrical problems/failure (especially with the older 12N/S fittings involved too).

Which is why it need not only be a temporary solution.
It also depends me thinks on where you store the caravan, We store ours away from home and have no way of ever using it at home, for instance to cool the fridge a few days prior to leaving for a trip, so therefore have never bothered with the grey plug, just have the single one for lights etc. If anything we normally plug the cool box/fridge into the car anyway.
My car has the 13 pin socket fitted as standard by the dealer who fitted the tow bar our caravan had twin plugs, used a converter lead till it gave problems with the twin plug to socket conections (failure lights coming up on the dash board)bought a 13 pin plug with a grommit that took 2 cables from a company on EBay came complete with wiring instructions ,took about 30 minutes to fit.
Caravan dealers quoted £50 to do the job did my self for £7.60 including postage
