Sorry, I know this has been done to death, but having thought I understood someone on another forum has confused me.

I have a post 1997 licence and "thought" that I was okay with the following:

Car Weight 2150
Caravan MTPLM 1332
Total 3482, so under 3500kg.

However, the car weight i'm working on is the "actual" weight of the car and I now believe I should be using the gross train weight? Where do I find this?

Thanks in advance - I relaly thought I was sorted but am a bit worried now.

You will find the GVW on the cars vin plate usually these are inside the engine compartment or on the door pillars.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

For you the caravan MTPLM must be less than the unladen mass, use the massin service from your V5.
Also the sum of the MTPLM and the GVW ( top number on the plate ) must be less than 3500kg
Then the sum of the actual weights of the caravan and car must add up to less than the max train weight. ( second number on the plate)
