My reply assumes that you are referring to an unbraked trailer.
On my trailer the chain is fixed to the trailer under the nut of one of the hitch bolts, a large washer ensures that the nut tightens down squarely. With regard to securing to the towing vehicle I would not recommend simply fitting the chain over the towing vehicle tow ball since the idea is that if the ball was to break the chain would keep the trailer firmly attached to the vehicle. It should be fixed to a seperate point, if you look on Towsure website (Item B82) you will see a suitable bracket. If you attach the chain by a lock consider that the lock must be of good quality i.e it needs to be as strong as the chain, I use a 2 ton security lock.
