Did not have what you had Alan. But on Saturday last we were travelling down the M11 towards the M25 and it was terrible weather, Misty, murky could not see thenm torrential rain came down. Most drove sensible to the conditions.

Suddenly it came flying down the road, outside overtaking lane closing in on 70mph + a double axle being towed  by a Volvo suddenly needed the turn off ooops he nearly went passed it. Straight across all the other lanes barely making the slipway, I say barely as it went across the painted hazard lines thats how close it was.To hell with all other drivers.

I cannot even count how many cars, vans & lorries have done that to us whilst we towed. Just the first time a car/caravan has. Its a wonder it never turned over.

If they want to kill themselves, go ahead without killing others, as we do not want to be part of the strewn rubble or clean up brigade. Morons

I would venture to suggest that the OP was doing the safest thing by trying to get ahead of the lunatic towing so recklessly.  I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be behind him.

To those who have criticised the OP for overtaking someone travelling at 73mph on the motorway, I would ask, when was the last time you travelled on a motorway or dual carriageway and didn't see most motorists breaking the speed limit?
