Well, thanks to THAT hailstorm last month, both our tow car and caravan have now been written off by our insurers. We will get what is called "market price" from the insurers (which won't allow us to buy the same kind of van like for like). Was wondering if anyone knows if we could strike a deal with insurers to keep the van under a salvage deal? We were wondering whether to attempt replacing skylights ourselves? Anyone else with this problem? Our dilemma is that we're supposed to be going anyway in 3 weeks and time is running out.....

Thanks duffs, thought I'd ask as we did have that option with our car, but decided to settle in the end. Just waiting to see what the insurance co. comes back with ...

With car's it depends upon the status of the write off. A category D write off (repairs though minor cost more than the value of the car) you can get the payout and you get to keep the car, just insist that you want to keep the car and they deduct from the payout the salvage payment. It might be the same with caravan's. all you have to do is ask. They are normally very friendly and provide the correct advise on talking to them.
start looking at what it would cost to replace like with like and try and save the adverts to show what it would cost to replace, ie your car could be say 2000 but they would offer only what the trade would buy it for so you will have to pay the difference, don't forget the person you speak to will be trying to knock you down to save them money, tell them to replace the car/ van and see what they offer but state that you want same colour/year/mileage.
you can only ask. companies sometimes prefer to do this as it saves them the admin and associated costs with disposal.
make sure you find out exactly how much its going to cost you to fix it up.
the figure that they will sell it to you is usually a percentage of the market value....i.e. this is the deal that they have with the scrap/collection company.
what they will do is pay you the difference between the two figures, so you can use that to make repairs.
you may also find it harder to insure as it has been previoulsy written off...this may be a consideration to any future claim as they will reduce the value accordingly as it was a "repaired" van.
We recently discovered our heiki rooflight had a piece of perspex missing. We got a quote for the insurance for over £600 to supply & fit the perspex only so I can't imagine it being a viable option to try & repair a write off. I thought it would have cost about £150 to repair what is after all a piece of moulded plastic. As usual in this country we get ripped off at every turn.
their getting to handy at just written of cars and other kit, brother got rear ended by someone they said due to the damage it would written off, he persisted in it being repaired, the damage cost 1200 to repair
it would have cost them about 5 grand (book value) for the car, i just don't understand them. am still fighting of a claim due to bash cash, they weren't interested till the other chap put in bill for 60 grand on hire cars
I also dont think anyone should claim whiplash with out a air bag deploying

Thanks for your relies everyone. We bought our van new in 2005 for £12k but the insurance are only willing to give us £6,900 less excess. To buy a van the same year/make/model would cost us £7.5 - £8.5k, so we are out of pocket. Are in process of disputing settlement with insurance, fingers crossed they will up the amount.

keep pressing them.....on my recent claim our insurer said they got a figure from glasses guide.
seemed they had a differnt copy of the glasses guide that I had seen whcih was very odd, and they came up with their own "offer" figure.
if you can prove it would cost more then they have to listen to that....although consider that no-one pays the screen price, so there is always going to be negotiation
When our swift conqueror was written off due to hail stone damage
After assessment we made an offer for the salvage .
the caravan value was £5500 from the insurance company we offered £1500 for the van they accepted and payed us the difference
We then had an independent inspection on the van to make sure it was roadwoththy (the damage was only cosmetic) along with a service,
Presented the details to another insurance company who insured the van at a lower value
When we sold the van some years later we disclosed to the buyer the claim associatted with the van as it will show on the cris register as an insurance write off .
Hope this helps
Tony
Thanks everyone think we're going to try disputing first, we've printed off examples of adverts for the Same model/age of van first . Will keep you posted ......

Similar happened when my car was written off Weeksy, they gave me a low figure, I proved to them via advert printouts etc that the quote was way to low, they agreed and upped their offer to a more realistic amount. Hopefully your insurers will do the same for you.

Keep uis informe;d also what insurance you have; the company always worth knowing what is a good one or one that does not bend even an fraction
Hi Weeksy I don"t know if this any good but there is a 2006 Bailey Pageant Bretagne on E-bay in excellent condition at £7,250 but you can make a offer on it .if the insurer will not pay anymore .
