We always keep a caravan log book to write down all our tours, and to make notes on the sites we enjoyed and the ones to give a miss to next time were in the area, we also keep a tally of how many nights we have spent out in the caravan since we bought it, and in three years of ownership on 5th July this year, we have completed 21 weeks, but we would have probably done a few more if my OH had not been ill in 2010, as this season, April till October we are hoping to complete ten weeks in total caravanning, but thats because we are lucky enough to be retired and have the time to do so.

Our trips out do tend to be more extended stays in the same area, 3 weeks in Norfolk coming up, and 7 nights in Conwy just completed, we are UK only caravanners for health reasons, and normally stay within 200 miles of home.

We did sell our last caravan about 12 years ago due to lack of time to use it, and fast growing teenage girls who no longer found it cool to be shareing the same sleeping space as mum and dad!  it was only after we retired that we returned to the Hobby, although we did do some tent camping inbetween.

Each year has varied for us. Currently in our second of two weeks in Newquay! On course for around 50 nights this year. Last year was less than half that. Distance from home varies anything up to 300 odd miles away. Weekends are often only 20 miles.

My point? There's no rules as to how many nights you get away. It's what suits you and your circumstances. If you only manage 4 nights but you enjoy it then what's the problem? When you no longer enjoy it or the costs to keep it become too great then maybe that's the time to sell up.

Thanks I am going off as soon as possible to exploit all I can then. As we get a lot of pleasure for doing so.17 I mean by the first definition as the second one was all I had heard of.17

aw tango . sorry to hear of your loss.   We tried to get away in our new van (the old one was condemned as an accident waiting to happen)but in th e excitement of loading up the two youngsters ( black and tan scent hound and ex romanian street dog ) had a fracas with the bossdog (11 yr old staffy) which meant no holiday and lot s of time at the vets and big bills. A month later we actually made it but our dear Tash (15yr old Gsd x lancashire heeler) was taken poorly on day two, had to com e home in the caravan and expired just as we carried into her home ..she never did like going away . like the others. The other half bought the caravan   as part of her retirement present to herself..premature as she still has to work, because of the change in the rules.    We are determined to get away more often next year and as we both work with various dog rescues are looking for dog shows and other events where we can enjoy the van while raising some funds for the rescues..with 5 dogs in tow.. it as much for them as it is for us.   We spent 15 years tenting 5 times a year with two border collies. since passsed ,so I think its ingrained in our blood. I always have a sad moment or two, but its so good to get out and about with the current crew.

Don't worry about how much time you get away in your van, it's the quality of that time that matters.

Do you enjoy yourselves when you do manage to get away? if the answer is Yes than carry on going away whenever circumstances permit.
