hope this isn't a silly question. We are going to look at a van being sold privately and wonder if it is worth taking a damp meter, or wouldn't damp show up in the summer
Not silly at all, always go armed with a damp meter, whatever the season, save you a lot of heartbreak, make sure you test everywhere, good luck.

Dont let anybody try to put you off looking for faults with idle chat.take a damp meter, and DONT take them for their word even though they look like butter wouldnt melt in their mouth..its your money..
...but "summer" - do you mean the very damp season...?
("How can you tell when it's summer? The rain is warm...")
Some advice I read - file the probe ends to sharp points, and don't just touch the surface of the wallboards etc - press through the (somewhat waterproof) surface...

Are you being serious.....if any one nade dimples in my walls I would be seriously p*ssed off..... Surely those damp meters are sensitive enough asnot to cause marks or damage.
I am in the process of selling my caravan and have never seen any damp, I wouldn't mind someone having a damp meter to check it out, but I wouldn't let them poke a sharpened probe through the outer skin, that's taking the mick.

If you have the van serviced, this is done annually as part of the warranty. I have never noticed dimples, they are very fine points on the meters.
I can see if I look very very close, around certain bits of my van where it has been damp tested, by the service engineers ect, they are so tiny they arnt noticeable unless you really looked hard for them, I don't mind, it's a small price to pay to know its dry.

I don't think there are many caravans about now that have outer skins that can become permeated with damp, so I think I would risk not using a tester at all on the outer skin....
