We have just returned from a 3 week holiday doing 1500+ miles towing. The last leg of out trip was today from the Lake District to home. When we left we did the usual checks with the lights and all was ok. The drive home was uneventful and steady. I hadn't made too many lane changes and when I came off the motorway I realised that my left hand indicator wasn't bleeping. Fortunately the storage is only 5 minutes from the motorway and once we were there we attempted to fix the problem. We jiggled the wire and pulled it out, replaced it etc etc. the other lights were fine but nothing from the left indicator. Could this be a bulb blown? (And if so, will that nice man at Halfords put a new one in for me)   Just joking.
Would appreciate any thoughts
Alison.

Could be a bulb, in my experience it's more commonly a bad connection between the socket on the car and the plug on the caravan. I always change mine every couple of years before they start giving trouble. It costs about £10 for the pair and takes about 20 minutes to change them over.

Thanks DaveCouches. It was actually changed last year but has since got a piece chipped out of the black casing. This was a few months ago but it's been fine (or so we thought )   We had a similar problem with our previous caravan but the connection was intermittent. It would work then not, when we jiggled with it. Today we couldn't get a flicker. But I shall into getting a. new connection. It needs doing anyway.
Thanks again
Alison

Spray some wd40 into the holder, sometimes its the bit at the bottom of the holder....the bottom end of the bulb touches it.

I had the same problem a few years ago and to fix it I stripped the rear light assembly down re-made the wire connections and cleaned the terminals we had no problems after that.Ian

Friend of mine had a similar problem earlier this year.  We got down to Le Mans in convoy OK, but after packing up a week later, he found the left indicator wasn't working on the 'van.  Wriggled, bashed and cleaned everything, but eventually found there was no power going to the relevant pin in the 12N.  Fortunately, we were leaving 'vans in Northen France for a week, so he was able to travel home safely.

Took car into shop that fitted tow bracket, and they found it was a relay that has failed and the whole electronic box was replaced - fortunately under warranty.

So if the bulb is OK and the connections sound - put a meter across pins one (feed) and 3 (earth).

Thanks delboyd. You make it sound simple. Looks like I might have to find a man that knows what he's doing.

Right. I've now ordered a new 12N plug, a gizmo for testing both electrics on the car and caravan, some new bulbs (4 LPG stickers - totally unrelated) and hubby has orders to buy WD 40. What's the betting the lights work the next time we plug them in.
