Hi sadly we're giving up caravanning. We argue far too much in the van & the older kids are kicking off that they don't want to come anymore. We bought our caravan back in march (oct 2009 model) & I'm wondering are we too late to get the servicing done? I'm so slack I haven't even paid the CRIS registration fee on it (but they are aware we're the new owners) I'm not too worried about that cause I know they send out the new paperwork within a week. What I'm worried about though is the service & warranty. The warranty is not in our name either. Just never got around to it! What do we do 1st? The service then put the warranty in our name. Or do we not bother with the warranty if we're selling it on & just leave that to the new owners? Sorry if I sound a bit dumb. We've never had a van this new before. I think the van is coming up for the 3rd yr service on the 1st of oct. Are we too late?

If you missed a service then the warranty is void anyway. CRiS can get the paperwork turned round in a week, but it can take a lot longer depending on how busy they are.

As you bought the van in March this year (from what you have said) then, assuming that the previous owner had the van serviced at the correct time for the warranty you should be ok, provided that the warranty is one that is transferrable. Check out the warranty to see if it is transferable. It may either say, specifically, that it is transferrable and set out the protocol to follow to register the new owners interest with the manufacturer or it will say something like "the owner for the time being" . You will probably need to register your ownership with the manufacturer for evidence of continuity of ownerships for the warranty to subsist before you sell.

For the third year service the usual condition is that it muust be before the anniversary date of its original sale date, so get it booked in for the week before the 1st October. A purchaser may wish to see that, as the van is now three years old, all of the electrics and gas have had safety checks. These should be done every three years. The usual dealer service does not cover safety checks so you may need to get a specialist mobile engineer in to do those.

As for CHRiS did the former owner complete their part of the form for you get the registration changed into your name.  Anyway get it registered. A prudent purchaser will not buy a van from someone who cannot proove that he owns it!

Phil

Thanks Phil. Yes the previous owner let CRIS know we had it. He also had the warranty transferred over to himself so i don't think there will be a problem for us. The service is all up to date too. I just need to get off my bum & ring CRIS to pay them & get the new paperwork sent out to me. Your right though I wouldn't buy a van which wasnt registered. I also wouldn't want 1 without the services up together either. Infact I let 1 go just before ours cause the owner didn't get it's 2nd service done. Hubby wasnt even going to bother as money is very tight at the moment. I think we would be fools not to though! Ok so am I right in thinking then that we should get our CRIS paperwork then take it down to have it serviced (luckily the original dealer is only 40 mins away even though hubby drove 5hrs to buy it) & then get the warranty switched over to us? Also how much do you think the van would have depreciated since march. They don't normally go for ad much do they in the autumn? I would like at least 10k for it. It comes with 2 awnings, locks & everything anyone would need to get started.

Ooh where did you advertise it savanne? I'm gutted! I rang to sort out the CRIS registration (that's fine) but then went on to sort out the warranty & apparently i should have sorted it within 3 months
I thought the service was due the 1st of oct but checked & it was done mid November last yr. In light of that I may as well just put it up for sale straight away. I'm going to give it a good clean tomorrow & put it on the bay of fleas! I was hoping to get 10000 for it but I think I'll be lucky to get 9500 now without the warranty. Saying that though not all caravan manufacturers let you swap the warranty over anyway do they?

we sold it on the bay of fleas. Take lots of good pics and do a good write up. If you put it on as a classified ad its £15 for 28 days. You have the option of letting buyers make offers.

Some buyers will be put off by lack of warranty, we personally would only buy a newish (less than 5 yrs old) with a warranty but thats us and not everyone else.

Good luck with the sale, your van is too big for us.

Thanks savanne. I bought mine cause it had warranty left on it. I wish I'd known you only get 3 months to transfer it over. Oh well live & learn! I do know some caravan companies won't let you transfer the warranty so hopefully buyers won't be too put off. Good luck finding another 1. You didn't have you're long did you. I think you bought around the same time as me didn't you? I got mine in march.

Who gave you the info re 3 months to transfer warranty. Have you spoken to Elddis themselves? Have you checked the manual/warranty booklet. I think it would be rather harsh especially as the services were up to date. Elddis even allowed you to claim even if you missed a service but would expect to to pay a contribution ( a percentage on a sliding scale according to the number of years missed)

At 3 years old it is only the water ingress warranty that remains. All the equipment warranties would be expiring then anyway.

Wizzo I rang Elddis & the woman was quite abrupt at 1st! The 1st thing I said was I was ringing to transfer a warranty & she asked how long I owned it. As soon as I said march she got all funny with me & said in an abrupt manner that I was too late! She then said did you not read your manual it states you need to get it done within 3 months. I said I had a flick through it but didn't notice it & that I was new 2 newish caravans & didn't have a clue about warranties. She softened a bit then & I think she actually felt sorry for me.

Savanne glad I made you smile with my advert. It's true! My 13yrold is spoiling it for everyone. She just sits there moaning saying caravanning is boring. This in turn winds my hubby up & we end up arguing. He also said where ever he turns there's a kid in the way. My youngest is a pain in the bum too (18 months)
