Topic: What does a Double Yellow Line mean?

Greetings All,

The title of this thread is not asked in order to get you all hot under the collar with examples of past bad experiences.

I would like to impart a little knowledge that could help you in parking in tourist areas now we are approaching Autumn and Winter.

At the end of September (or October)many seaside resorts go "out of season" and with it, the Double Yellow Lines cease to have authority.
You may notice that with the Lines there are little notices (on walls or posts) that might say, for instance, that the Double Yellow Lines are in operation from Easter to September 30th.to quote an example.

Outside those dates it's open season (unless you could be considered as causing an unnecessary obstruction) to park on those Lines.
IF THERE ARE NO NOTICES THEN THE DYL's ARE IN EFFECT ALL THE TIME!!!
All around the West Country there are examples of this and I note them on the maps I possess.

The number of times I have been given a non knowing look for parking on DYL's in the Autumn and Winter are countless but I have never received a ticket because the DYL's are not active.

The next time you venture to the tourist areas, have a look. You may save a fortune in car parking charges that are simply not necessary

Certainly a lot easier to park in Newquay & other Cornish towns out of season for reasons stated in the op. The roads are quieter, the crowds are less & the weather is even worse than in the middle of summer, if thats possible.

In Bridlington a double yellow line means that you can abandon your car on it for five or ten minutes whilst you pop into the nearby shop, and, if no one is looking, into another shop.

If you're referring to the posts above yours then Yes, you would need a Blue Badge to park 'to pop into the shops' but as for 'Seasonal DYL's' No, you don't.

In our 'Home' town people just ignore the DYL's. A proportion even ignore the zig zags because the lazy g!ts are too bone idle to walk to the two Cash Dispensers at the banks.
I'd like to don my old uniform and start dishing out the tickets.
I'd do it without pay for 10% of the proceeds.

You're quite right - DYLs means "No Parking at all - for some period". They are an indication only that some sort of parking restriction applies. The signs are always what you need to look at and as you say in holiday areas especially they quite often don't apply at all out of season. Doesn't seem to stop people parking on them even when the restictions do apply though.
