I've been tent camping for a few years using my motorcycle and trailer. We've been camping in the car a couple of times (due to the wife being injured/ill) but it doesn't quite feel the same. We go on the bike as much as possible even if the forecast looks a little dodgy. We are now looking into ways to get away when it's not possible to take the bike.
I had a caravan many years ago and am thinking of getting another one and making some alterations.
I want to buy an oldish 4 berth van, maybe mid to late 90's which has seating/beds at both ends. I'd remove the seating one end and replace it with a proper bed which can be left "ready made".
Has anyone done this or made any other alterations to a van.
I'm looking at an ABI Award Globestar van which looks to be ideal for what I want.

If all the seating, table and cushions are removed and replaced with, say, a pine bed base and mattress I wouldn't have thought the weight difference wouldn't be much to worry about.
I don't know a great deal about caravans but I've seen some vans packed to the rafters when they turn up on site.

When I got my five berth I gave ny mate my old two berth . He removed the wardrobe and toilet and built lightweight bunk beds in their place. It sounds like a good idea to me. Like other advice just be careful not too put too much weight at rear of van. Then. Ensure nose weight is correct.
You could look for a five berth with the rear dinette (loads to choose from). The rear dinette converts into a double bed with a bunk above. Just leave the bed made up and remove the bunk (8 screws) to save a bit of weight. Get a cheap memory foam topper and your sorted. At least you can easily convert it back to standard when you come to sell it.
I would have thought that with a suitable sized dinette made up in bed mode it would be as simple as using a double mattress instead of the seat cushions?
Unfortunatley er indoors uses me as a human hot water bottle when we're camping.
I woke up one morning and mentioned to her I had a dream that I had a huge growth on my back, when I woke up I realised it was her. Went down like a lead balloon.

sounds good to me,make a good frame and and look in the caravan magazine you will find firms that will make you a light weight mattress ,because you are thinking of island bed it means the weight is in the middle, let us know how you get on.

The older vans are not as wide as newer ones I have afeeling if you put in a matress to make an island bed you wouldnt get up the sides. Or they would of done this years ago. I think if you use a double dinette just make up the bed and leave it if you have people round you can then take up the bed. I have a fixed bed and if honest I would have a double dinette at least you could entertain if cold outside. My opinion only.

Doubting that the last post in this site was a few days over four years ago !?!
I hope my post will be acknowledged by someone who can advise.
I recently bought a three bedroom Bordeaux caravan at All Hallows.
The two bedroom version has a window at the rear as do many other caravans on site .
The rear of the three bed has double door storage that I would very much like to have glass in the double doors and have it made accessible from the inside bringing more space and light into the rear bedroom. It's very dark and pokey on the rear bedroom.
All that would ned doing would be to make an opening in the board partition, still keeping storage space at either end
I feel.it ought to have been a consideration in the manufacturing as I know it would be preferable for most people.
There is an enormous radiator which would need moving as currently far too close to the bed for comfort
You will probably get a better response if you start a new thread in the static caravan section. This section is for touring caravans which are very different.
