I have found a caravan online that I would liek to go and view but the gentleman selling it says that its is set up to run from 240v electric. The only thing is that the camp sites I go to do not have an electric hook up and I would want to be able to run the electric from a battery. The caravan is a 1998 Freedom one and I wanted to know if it was possible to install a battery, or if there is something there already that can mean I can run it off 12v or do I need to get this set up by a professional and if so what prices would I be looking at to get this done? Thanks in advance.

A lot of foreign caravans don't have a battery but have a 230/12V transformer. If this is the case you could fit a battery in a suitable place and use a good quality charger plugged in to a 230V socket to keep the battery charged when on EHU and wire the 12V from the battery via an isolating switch so that the battery operates the 12V equipment.Bear in mind that if there is any 230 V appliances,Fridge etc it isn't really practicable to run them from a 12V battery for any length of time.

Imported caravans often have no battery, they have 240v hookup & a transformer to run the 12v lights & water tap etc. If you want to fit a battery, the cheap way is to disconnect transformer, install battery & second 12s lead, this will mean battery will charge from car while driving, I'm guess price of this would be cost of battery + wiring = £100odd + labour at whatever hourly rate your installer charges say £50/p.h. Including secure mounting of battery this might take 3-4hrs so maybe £300.

The more expensive way would be to fit a new transformer/charger, this would allow battery charging while caravan plugged into ehu & might add another £150.

All this assumes there is somewhere convenient to mount battery which ideally should be vented to outside. A professional installer might insist on this but a diy installation may not bother about venting battery. The way around ventilation(I think)is to install a gel battery(I stand to be corrected on this)but much more expensive.
