I've been with AA for years. Called them today to see if breakdown of the caravan is covered. Whilst they say yes, it doesn't seem to be written with any clarity in their policy. I think they would recover the caravan if it was being towed when the car broke down, but if the car was ok, but the caravan wasn't e.g. Puncture, accident, electrics failure, brakes seized on......etc. I'm not sure if they would attend this as part of the break-down, although they might say yes on the phone, if it not written down....... There doesn't seem to be any way of adding on extra cover for caravan either. My concern is that i would discover that i actually wasn't covered at the time of a breakdown which would be a potential headache. Did other members have to leave AA and move the CC or CCC cover?
We have recently taken out breakdown cover with the RAC but if you are a member of the Camping & Caravanning Club you can take out the extra cover called RAC Arrival which covers both car and caravan. The reason why we chose this cover is because the caravan is covered whilst hitched or unhitched to the towcar so if you go out for the day whilst your caravan is on site and your car breaks down they will recover your car within a 75 mile radius and retrieve both units and take them both home or to the desired destinations of your choice. I queried this because our caravan is kept in a secure storage compound and they confirmed that they would drop off the caravan first then take the vehicle either home or to a local garage of your choice for repair. They are currently doing a deal whereby if you take out the RAC Arrival you get free membership to the C&CC to qualify for this package but it's actually cheaper to join the C&CC first for £40 then take out the Arrival cover afterwards, so although they try to make it look very attractive it's not such a good deal when you work it out. It works out to about another £70 more if you accept the RAC Arrival deal rather than do it independently.
Yes we swapped once we got the caravan for the reasons already given. Used to be with the RAC but now have mayday through the caravan club. I compared lots of policies and looked at the small print to see what would actually be covered.
This worked out the cheapest for us at the time for me and hubby to be covered along with the caravan.
As CatieB said, you have to be in one of the two major clubs to qualify for guaranteed caravan breakdown cover as the Caravan Club uses 'Green Flag' which is called 'Mayday' and the Camping & Caravanning Club use the RAC which is called 'Arrival'. I didn't check out the 'Mayday' breakdown prices as we are not members of the Caravan Club, however, if you are a member of either of these clubs then their corresponding caravan rescue I assume would be the best policy to take out whichever club you are a member of.
If you are not sure which is the best rescue policy then contact both customer services of Green Flag and the RAC ask them both to send a detailed policy document through the post stating what the cover actually includes along with the package fees. I think both rescue services do European cover but because I never venture out of the UK I didn't want the extra European cover so the cost was reduced accordingly and this is something else you also have to take into account and decide what you actually need. If you want the Green Flag cover then obviously you need to be a member of the Caravan Club first to qualify for their 'Mayday' rescue. I specifically requested the RAC to post out the 'Arrival' policy before I made any commitment to joining which they did and after reading the contents I was happy to go ahead and received immediate cover over the phone to which our RAC 'Arrival' membership cards (with the C&CC logo) came through the post a few days later.

Thanks for replies. Is there a big difference between CC and CCC cover? Also regarding their insurance? I'm a member of the CCC already.
CatieB - i see you went to clippesby in August. We love it there, have been going there with our tent at least once a year for last 4 years.
Maybe you recommended it to us! About 2 or 3 years ago we were camping in a tent at deers glade when a family in a tent raved about clippesby. We tried to get in ever since but it was full in holidays. We booked the august trip very early on and have rebooked for next year too. Lovely.
Autoaid are excellent. It costs me £38 a year to cover our two cars and our caravan for full service. The only thing we have to do is pay up front if we need recovery (which we have recently shelled out £500 and are currently awaiting the refund cheque after we needed hauling back from Exeter after our caravan lost a wheel). Never had a problem before so well worth considering. They are part of autonational. Google them. Hope you get a better deal.
