We are collecting our new (first) caravan next Friday. It is brand new, do I need to worry about mice in there, or is it generally older caravans that suffer? Ours will be in storage too. I don't have a cat, or a shotgun.,

The age of the caravan hasn't anything to do with it, mice can be very cute but not that clever...lol. Theyr'e just looking for somehere warm and dry to bed down and eat whatever the age of caravan so the idea is not to attract them in the first place by leaving any food stuffs in low down cupboards especially biscuits, bread, doggy treats or anything chewable such as toilet paper, newspaper or cardboard etc. And just in case they do decide to bring any of it with them from outside this is where the sonic repeller does it's job as it deters them before they even think about it.

Good luck! My van is in the same storage compound as Tango's and we had mouse problems as well. We tried the sonic thingy - the little critters chewed it! Best thing we found was to remove all food/chewables and used bait boxes from B&Q, and a long handled spoon to pick up the dead uns. We checked twice a week (fortune in petrol) but we got rid eventually.
How do you know that your caravan is kept at the same storage compound as ours? I know that DSB from Polesworth kept his caravan there which was spoken about in a thread a long while back.
It was discussed in the same thread if I recall, and either you or DSB said that we were all at Alcatraz/Fort Knox. Pretty irrelevant now, as it happens - we are off to store at pastures slightly cheaper and much nearer home soon. I think the mouse problem won't be much different tho!
Sorry to hear that you're leaving Alcatraz chilephilly but wish you the best of luck where you're moving to anyway. I moved from there after 18 months because I found somewhere cheaper but then returned a year after as the other storage was insecure and got stuck in mud on two occassions and had to be towed out with the farmer's tractor. I've remained at Alcatraz ever since because it's secure and only the other side of town for us. Good luck anyway.
I was advised that mothballs are the answer. I've bought loads from wilkinsons along with several small food containers from the same place. Place several balls inside each container and then drill a few holes in the lid to let the smell out. Place them all around caravan under seats etc and near vents. I had mice a couple of years ago and since using mothballs haven't had any more visits.
Just to update you - sonic repeller been in place for 2 weeks and no evidence of mouse activity since. Will post again to update in a few weeks. Tempted to put the loo roll and teatowels back in there to really test it.
Went to get my caravan cover out of the shed the other day and you've guessed it - half a dozen mice reposing inside! Took me a couple of hours to repair the holes with patches (thank goodness the spare material wasn't in the same place) Then I cleared out the shed of all things soft, spongy and material based. It's impossible to try to keep them out here in the countryside as well, so I've just taken out anything not made of metal.
Funny enough, the caravan in the front garden hasn't had a single one in there for three winters (touch wood), but I take out everything, including the soft furnishings and store in the house.
I think I will try Phil's mothballs suggestion in my shed!

Old wives tale. i was advised to use mothballs, bought 2 packs and spread em all roud caravan even in front locker.i even filled 3 bait trays with poison grain.went to caravan too check only to find grain gone and mothballs had been chewed.found the grain stored in several places in the van where mice had moved for later. so bought caravan home no more storage.
2 months on and the electronic repeller is still working. I bought 2 more and have them in a) my loft and b) my chicken feed shed - not seen or heard any mice since.
Have recently been lent a mouse trap that electrifies the mouse and kills it - I have baited it and put it out but there are no mice around because of my excellent repeller.
It was this one :

We have had one of the sonic devices for years now...just make sure you replace the battery every 6 months. Fingers crossed, never had a mouse problem in the van.
We did have field mice in our garage and this was a problem on and off for a while. We found the only effective way was poison and traps (but we were not able to use a sonic device at the time as the guinea pigs hutch was in there).
Some say the sonic things work, others say they are a waste of money. All I can say is that other vans near to us in storage had mouse infestations and we didn't so perhaps they just move on to the next one without a repeller?
We also remove everything even remotely edible, together with towels, bedding etc. No point making it even more welcoming.
