Since I started caravanning and this week that has come to an end !
It all started off well as we all loved it, but after being on a seasonal pitch for the last 2 years it is now time to call it a day.
Going away on a Friday night became too much of a hassle and not being set up till around 8pm earliest and having to leave most sites by 12pm or earlier we decided to try seasonal.
That started off well but by the end of last year and the crap weather we were a little sick of that too, but we have stuck it out this year and I have been so disappointed with the weather here in blighty, and the kids (8&13) were getting sick of it too and wanted to stay at home, we up sticks and went to Majorca in a private Villa for 2 weeks in the summer.
Well that has sealed the caravans fate I’m afraid.
The money we spend paying for the thing and site fees, Diesel and all the associated costs we have decided to sell up whilst it is still worth some good cash, and have a couple of European holidays a year now the kids can stand airports.
I would be lying if I said I will miss it as to be honest I wont, will certainly not miss setting up and taking the awning down in the wind and rain.
I have met some really nice people (and some right miserable so and so’s) on sites, and had some fantastic crack on here.
I will keep dipping in and out to find out the latest crack, but for now thank you all for the tips and chat for the last 6 years,
Regards,
The Shepherds

I know exactly what you mean I am trying to persuade OH that we should sell our FC and not buy a motorhome like he wants but use the money to go abroad for a couple of years. We have only managed to get away twice this year both times for just a week. Our 15 yr old doesn't want to come anymore and both times we had to pack up wet.

What a shame!  I wish you well, I like it abroad (S of France) and enjoyed coach and train trips down there.  But Her Greatness isn`t up to that now, with all the hassle etc involved.  So we go caravanning;  keeping it simple and basic.  Like no awning . . . have done for a year.  It`s rained often enough but we still love it! . . .off  to Flookborough in 3 weeks,(can`t wait) which will be probably . . . . muddy!

Have fun, whatever you do!

So do plenty of us. Which is why we tow our caravans down there every summer.

Had five years away after van was stolen from driveway but returned end of last year, it was the best decission Ive made for quite a while.

I think you will be back when the kids get older and you can manage to get away by yourself

I think Airports are a hassle queuing,luggage,security
You leave home hours before you fly,(could be on site by the time you arrive abroad)
Costs you to travel park your car or taxi fares,(fuel for caravan holiday)
Get ripped off at money exchange
To be out of room maybe hours before you fly home or to let cleaners in everyday,(offsite by 12pm sounds ok)
Sorry but ive done all that i like my home from home where i can relax and choose what i do and when
Cramped in a plane for hours isnt for me anymore

If you are in a position to do so why not do both. Have not towed caravan to South of France or Spain but tend to have a break in the sun every other year to balance the weather we have be having over here.

But the weather is soooo much better abroad add this against the cold the wind the rain lack of sun and that's on a good day. We have holiday in the U.K. this year what a wash out I have no problem seeing why people go abroad even with the hassle of airports ect., The high price of fuel high campsite charges expensive car parking, no wonder lots of Brits head for southern France.

hi, we just started carvanning as a family this year. we love it and i would go away every single weekend if i could. we keep local and my hubby loves it as much as me as he travels abroad for work and last year clocked up an average of 32 flights, sometimes 2 in one day. so its the caravan for us, just waiting for delivery of our new gorgeous swift challenger sport 544. im counting the days till delivery and half term.............

life may not be the party we had hoped for, but whilst we are here, we might as well dance.....
