Hi We have a avondale mayfly, The awning rail is one piece
from bottom of van so you have to start at the bottom to fit an awning, Would it be possible to cut a piece out higher up so that you can start there.
my last van had this system and it worked fine. Thanks mac.
just re-read your post.
do not think you would get it smooth enough to feed in after cutting, would need a large slot, plus you would need to take it past the stop point and then feed back into the bit you missed.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

You don't need to cut it. We just need to gently bend the outer edge of the rail outwards for about 3" at around your head height. There used to be a special tool to do it, but I have done it with a set of large headed plairs, doing it little bits at a time.
What you need is a piece of steel, about three inches long with a flat profile, (a little bit like a wallpaper scraper with a little more strength)
Insert the steel into the awning rail at a comfortable height for when you would be inserting the awning and GENTLY prise forwards to open the gap in the awning rail sufficient to get the beading of the awning in.
Hacksaw Bob, what you have indicated is an awning rail grunge and silicone remover. It slides around the rail and is "persuaded" to remove obstructions with assistance of a mallet or hammer.

Many thanks for the help, I have got myself an "Awning Rail Spreader" and if the weather is alright tomorrow I will get the job done, will let you know how it go'es. Mac.
