Since its launch in early 2011, The Caravan Club’s ‘outfit matching’ service, an online application to help members select the best combinations of car and caravan, has proved tremendously popular with over 800,000 specific ‘outfit matches’ being checked for legality, safety and comfort when towing.
The detailed results include weights, dimensions and engine characteristics, along with a clear description of the selected outfit’s suitability in terms of legality, safety and probable performance.
The Club’s outfit matching database currently holds details of over 58,000 models of car and over 11,000 models of caravans, trailer tents and folding campers, with additional models added each month. This means that nearly 650 million possible combinations can currently be assessed.
The database is available, free of charge, to Club members at any time via The Club’s website, with no restrictions on the number of options which can be tried out - similar, commercial online services charge at least £2 per outfit match. Members can check the compatibility of a specific car and caravan combination, or search for suitable cars to suit a given caravan, or caravans to suit a given car. Results are presented in summary form, allowing quick assessment of a range of options, with additional details available at the click of a button.
The database will be available for all visitors to the Motorhome and Caravan Show to trial, for free on The Club stand (2079).
Speaking of the outfit matching service, Technical Manager for The Caravan Club, Martin Spencer commented, “The Club has offered advice on choosing a good combination of car and caravan from its earliest days, with ever more sophistication as research, testing, experience and member feedback has increased our knowledge of the issues involved. While we have had a computerised system to base our recommendations on for many years, being able to open up this vital tool to all members to use themselves, whenever and wherever they wish, has meant that far more people can now benefit. Members’ confidence in the legality and safety of their chosen ‘outfit combination’ is therefore increased.”
