We are thinking of putting our van into storage for the winter. It is a farm that is locked with a gate that only the owners know the combination of and they move the vans in and out for you. Our caravan insurance is only valid if we use a minimum of the hitchlock and wheelclamp. How can we make sure that they owners of the storage yard use them if they move the van?
Also, what happens if they damage our van when they are moving others in and out and who will be liable for the damage? Is it acceptable to ask them for a copy of their liability insurance?
------------- Anyone who says something is foolproof hasn't met a determined fool!
Start with their Ts and Cs for the use of their storage facilities. many such facilities make it a condition of the contract that you are liable for the van when in storage so you have to have insurance. When they move the van in you should be there to see that all locks are attached. You also need to confirm to them in writing your insurance requirements so that you have evidence that you have made it clear that they must put the locks on.
I would ask for a copy of their insurance, as, if they are moving your van and do so negligently, then they are liable for the damage. You should run their Ts and Cs past your own insurers and send them a copy of the storage company insurance policy. There may be some ability to invalidate your insurance if they move your van and fail to attach the locks and then the van is stolen. So, make sure that your insurers are happy
