Not too sure about the quality of the reporting but if the caravan broke away I would imagine that it would be slightly damaged at least.

Im begining to think that these wheel clamp companies must be laughing all the way to the bank.Why buy some thing that takes minutes to take off better with the money in your pocket.Surely something can be made in this day and age that it will take hours to come off not minutes.?

There are some very cheap wheel clamps out there that can very easily be removed. Plenty on Ebay for around £15 !

I would always go for good quality ones, but as ever, if they come with Gas cutting equipment, nothing is going to stop them.

The report says it has been recovered in tact, but I can't imagine they botherd to connect the break away cable !

Clever is correct, portable gas cutting equipment is cheap these days and if someone wants to take your van, they will. All you can do is slow them down long enough for them to be caught in the act and store it somewhere secure or where it can be seen. Sad but true.

I was in our local locksmith's last year behind a guy who was playing holy hell with the bloke behind the counter. He had had a container broken in to when it was protected by the same kind of lock (costing £75 plus vat) that my company uses. His argument was that the lock was useless because thieves had cut it off with an angle grinder!

After reading this I was having a chat with the Manager of a New Forest Camp site who told me of the extremes thieves will go to in order to steal a van.

One example was a Caravan which the owners removed a wheel and replaced it with a clamp, clamped the other wheel, hitch lock etc. The thieves broke into the locker of a nearby van stole the spare wheel and fitted it to the van they wanted to steal, removed all the other security devices and drove it away.

One was stolen this year on a site we were at they cut off all security and just whipped round the awning with a knife left awning drove off with van in day light
