Hi Guys,

After some help please. I currently have a towbar with 7 pin single electrics for my trailer but have now bought a caravan.

I am being told I need a 13 pin adaptor if I want to charge on the go so to speak but not very good at this type of thing.

I can change to twin electrics but am still being told I will need an adaptor, is this correct or is there a way I can still run off the 7 pin electrics to connect to the caravan and still have the fridge running whilst travelling.

also I see online they mention euro pin adaptors, Is this the same adaptor or do I have to have a special one if taking the van abroad.

Sorry for the stupid questions but need to learn before we collect the van,

Dealer wanting £27 for the adaptor, is this a reasonable price?

Thank you in advance.

It depends on the caravan. If it is made after 2009 then it will have 13pin plug. Best bet here is to change your car to fully wired 13pin socket to power everything. If you have 7pin only socket on car you can tow caravan with single 13-7 adaptor to work just road lights. If you car has twin 7pin sockets you can use double adaptor to power everything.

If caravan was built before '09 it will have twin plugs. You can plug black plug into your existing single 7pin socket to power roadlights only on caravan or have the extra grey 12s socket installed on your car to power everything.

From your post I'm guessing you have bought a new caravan with 13pin plug. If you just want to tow it home then buy a single adaptor as I mentioned, much cheaper than the double adaptor dealer is trying to sell you. But best bet is to take you car to a towbar fitters & get fully wired 13pin socket installed.

If you are buying a single adaptor ensure you get one correct one, ie 13pin plug into 7pin socket. Also worth pointing out. If you get 13plug installed on car you can still tow your trailer using single 7pin plug into 13pin socket adaptor.

You will need an S socket in addition to the one already on the car if you want to run the fridge and charge the battery whilst travelling. For that to work with the caravan which has a 13 pin plug you will need an adaptor. It might be better to think about getting the car converted to 13 pin electrics so there is no need for an adaptor and the cost will be about the same. If you then want to be able to tow your trailer then Milenco do a neat little adaptor for about £8 than allows you to use your trailer with the 13 pin socket.

Ref the European adaptor this might be referring to mains electricity. Some campsites, particularly in France,  still have the old two pin connections so you would need and adaptor. Fortunately the majority of campsites seem to have the same connections as here in the UK.

Hi.

To charge the fridge the car will either need a 13 pin or 2 7 pin sockets (personally I would go for the 13). If you decide on 2 7 pin sockets then you will need an adaptor. £27 is a bit high for this - I would expect to pay between £20 - £25.

If you are taking the van abroad then you may have to buy a european electricity adaptor  although many sites now use the standard UK plug.

This site will probably explain things clearly...

As you have 2x 7-pin and a trailer, you could just buy the £27 adaptor and plug it in to your existing 7-pin socket (leaving one 7-pin plug on the adaptor unused) - and the caravan lights will work for towing.
If you were to install a '12S' socket on the car, then the 2nd plug on the adaptor could also be used, to run the fridge and charge the caravan's battery.

we have a single socket as we used to tow a trailer, we've just stayed with this option and don't run the fridge when we tow. the lights all work on the single socket
