Can anyone tell me with setting I should have my charger on please for our battery that we have taken out of the caravan for the winter?

Originally I put it on winter setting and levels were looking good sitting around 14v, but a posting on here suggested that would overcharge the battery which was not good, so I have out it on the car setting, however now when I go in the garage the charger sits in the standby position and the levels seem to be lowering each time, now showing at 12.9v this morning. Whenever I switch it backin to car mode, it looks like ts Harding etc but will soon switch back to standby.

What settings do you out yours on?

It was a brand new battery in October, so in theory is all ood!

i don't leave mine on all the time ,i just go into the garage once a week put it on car setting and let it cycle through, that should keep it topped up through the winter .as long as i doesn't drop below 12v it should be fine .
   if we do get a prolonged cold snap or snow i would then probably leave it on charge for that period .

others might know better but thats my way

So, silly question maybe, but on the standby mode it's on now, I am assuming its not charging, but just registering its power? Do I just flick it n to he car setting again, and then once recharged it goes back to standby? How do I get it to stay on if need be? It seems to automatically default back to the standby mode.....can you tell I'm new to all this lol!

If the battery is in good condition it will probably only need a trickle charge once a month or so

On the car setting it drops to about 0.1 amp when battery fully charged, so is safe to leave on permanently.
However, assuming that it's at home, I agree with the others that a monthly boost would be perfectly adequate.

On the "winter" setting at ambient temps above 0C it will over charge, in time wrecking the battery.

If it has settled to 12.9 or even down to 12.7 then the charger is doing exactly what it is designed to do. ie, stop charging a full battery. Remember it is a "smart" charger not a dumb trickle charger.

If it drops to 12.6 ish after charging, then it is time to worry.

As I have understood the instructions, the 'winter' setting is for a one off charge of a heavily discharged battery in cold conditions, or as a reconditioning charge for a battery in less than 100% condition.
Under most all other circumstance normal car charge setting should be used, or, on the motorbike setting, it auto detects 6v or 12v and then limits charge to 300ma, (1/3 of an amp), which is ideal for leaving permanently connected over winter.
