I was just looking at all the ads for new and shiny caravans in club mags and for the show in Manchester in the new year, but although sometimes the new and shiny is tempting, part of me just never wants to let go of my quirky, old half-a-caravan-with-canvas-where-the-walls-should-be. I wondered how many people on here have old caravans that they prefer to keep repairing, or even actually buy old ones to do them up, or for a better layout? Also interested in how you keep them on the road when spares run out and stuff. Would love to see stories and pics of what people have done with their units - I need the inspiration to get my sewing machine from under its cover and get ready for next season!
------------- August - Carsington Water CC Site. Don't know where else yet - only picking up the caravan on Friday!

I've got a mid 80s ABI Monza but for cost effectiveness, not love, ie somewhere to sleep in southern France summers, I don't use it in winter. £400 off ebay a couple of yrs ago. Spares are no probs for Al-Ko chassis dating right back to the 80s, bearings/brake parts etc are all available off shelf, tyres available no problem & should be replaced if they are yrs old. As for bodywork you just make do & mend, Isopon P40 & mastic in any external gaps to keep things waterproof. Not worth insuring so even more money saved...I should get a few more yrs out of it before its scrap.

Same here, a dutch 1982 vintage with a canvas pop top roof. Sits on the drive, so no storage fees, don't insure it either. Have done it up slowly over the past three years so now it's just lovely to go away in.... and it doesn't leak at the moment!!! so that's a plus as well!! LOL!

I absolutely LOVE my little 1969 Fisher Holivan - even if I won the Lottery, I wouldn't rush out to buy a sparkling white box on wheels. I would probably use the money to really do Holi up to exactly how I would like her to look, with professionaly made curtains, blinds and seat covers rather than my home made efforts!! lol
Pictures of her are in the "Crappy" thread.
