Has anyone towed a twin axle caravan in the Hebrides? We are(2 retired Ladies) thinking of North Uist,Harris and Lewis. Our overall outfit length is 12.75 metres.

Looking for info on roads, and sites that can accomodate our 8m caravan

I went to the Outer Hebrides in a wee campervan a few years ago. I don't know whether it would be a good idea towing a large caravan, the roads there are pretty small, lots of sharp corners and hills, and a lot of single track with passing places, cattle grids and gates!

A good plan would be to find a campsite pretty near to the ferry, near Stornaway and site the van there, then tour the Hebs in your car.

Toured years ago with a band i was playing with and i would not take a van that size there.As Jax said the roads are very narrow and once you get on one there is no turning back if you are towing a van..

I know the hebridies quite well, there is a site at stornoway, a mile from the ferry. If you have a good big jeep it is not impossible. Just requires slightly more planning, making sure you don't go down any dead ends, after all plenty big trucks travelling all over the islands. Although I suspect local knowledge plays a big hand.

Ment to say if you stick to the main routes, and head for campsites, you should be ok. If you are looking to wild camp next to the sandy beaches etc, and wonder off to remote places you might have some difficulties.
The beaches in Harris ate magnificent.

My experience of this is from a long time ago, so I know very little about sites. We used to wild camp on bits of grass near the beach. It was spectacular.

We toured Lewis and Harris with quite a big caravan. It was mostly single track with passing places, so the size of the caravan didn't really make much difference. Signposting wasn't too good, so there were some long reverses involved, but not a problem.

If you really don't want to drag the van about, the islands are not so big that you can't do it by car.

I tour the islands frequently in my single axle van with no problems. A friend of mine took his twin axle Bessacarr to Barra and North Uist in 2012, again with no problem. I find it easier to tow on the roads in the Hebrides than some of the narrow 2-way roads on the mainland.
