Evening!

We're looking to replace our old awning and have seen some that are 300cm deep rather than the 240cm deep that we currently have. The extra depth seems quite attractive but I wonder whether they would fit comfortably on the pitch and whether we would incur the wrath of our neighbors on site...opinions please?

Thanks

We have been pitched next to someone with a very deep awning, the sort that a varandah section can be created to one side of the front, whilst an ultra deep awning remains on the other side.

The 'fors' are obviously the extra space it gives its occupants, the 'against' is several things, the extra weight, wind resistance, and time taken to pitch, and yes indeed, when you include the guy ropes, a standard caravan club pitch width often leaves the 'Jumbo' awnings guy ropes encroaching onto the narrow dividing strip of grass between the pitches, and the part that some larger 4x4 type veichles are forced to use as a 'landing strip' for getting in and out of their cars on the passenger side when parked nose in on the neighbouring pitch.

I think they are fine where there are two strong fit people to help erect them and handle their volume of extra canvas, are used on a spacious campsite without tight boundries to the pitches, and the outfit can easily accomodate their extra weight when towing.

My parents have an extra wide awning and its great for the extra space, last year we went away as a group of 5 families, 18 people in total and we all fitted comfortably into their awning when the weather turned wet. it does take some erecting but my 69 yr old dad can do it by himself if needed with just the odd pole holding by my mum! ( that sounds so wrong)

We bought an extra wide awning for the space and it was a disaster. It was impossible to get any tension in the material even with extra poles and supports the roof sagged and an overnight dew would cause pools of water to form and bulges like there had been a downpour.

I would check the height of caravan it needs. The roof does need to slope to shed water

I have had both 2.4 and 3.0 metre widths and there are advantages and disadvantages with both. Firstly, the advantage of the 2.4 metre awning was that it was lighter, smaller and easier to transport either in the caravan or in the rear of the boot of the car and when erected the stability was somewhat better especially in windy weather plus less pegging out to do as well. The 3.0 awning is bigger and heavier but having the Dorema awning it has the attached storm strap clips sewn in at either end so it's an advantage because it is extra security in all weathers. Although the 3.0 metre awning provides extra space it can be a disadvantage due to being more weight on the supporting cross poles from the caravan sides which can make it a little more difficult to taught the material. If the material is not fully stretched it can then cause the curtains at each end to sag a little although not important. The more pegging out is obviously more time consuming but the biggest disadvantage of all was the fact that heavy rain pools on the roof are more likely to occur on the 3.0 metre awning than that of the smaller 2.4 metre one. Although we currently have the 3.0 metre awning if was to choose by preference I would opt for the 2.4 metre awning next time.

We have a porch awning which is much deeper than a normal awning. Can't remember the make or the actual measurement, but it must be at least 300cm deep. As Dzzy says it can be a problem, even unusable on some pitches, on some sites, because there just isn't sufficient room without encroaching on next door's territory! Fortunately we tend to use CLs where there is usually plenty of space. But it's so big in area that I can hardly claim it as a porch awning. Personally I wouldn't get another one of the same depth, and certainly not a full length extra deep awning!

Looks like we'll be sticking to the 240 wide then!

The difference between the two depths is actually 0.6 metres which is approximately 2 feet in imperial measurement so this gives you a better idea of the space gained with the 3.0 metre awning. You can then decide whether you can utilise that extra 2 feet or not but we found that as there are only two of us it was more practical having the 2.4 metre depth awning. If there are children with bikes etc. then you may find the extra space an advantage for your needs.

I would stick with the 240 and if you need extra space occasionally use an annexe. That's what we did.

As did we.  Some pitches can be that little bit too narrow for awnings wider than 230cms.Our annexe can be closed off, which allows us to use the awning as an open canopy, and still hide away contents that would otherwise be visible in the main awning. Enables a degree of tidiness, too.

Bertie.

We have an Isabella Opus 300 and find the extra space to be invaluable. We are a family of 4 and a  dog and soon fill up the extra space! We find it no harder than a 240 to put up and it doesn't take up much more space than our old Bradcot Active 240. It is heavier though so we carry it at the back of the boot against the seats.

We have never had a problem with water pooling on the roof although our caravan is continental and extra tall so maybe that helps. We have also not yet come across a campsite where the extra depth has been a problem.

We would not go back to a 240 deep awning now, at least not until the boys are grown up and we are caravanning alone.
