I just had the same on gumtree I emailed the seller via gumtree asked for inside photographs to be sent to me they instantly emailed back to say to make correspondence quicker use a different email address and send my tel number. The reason you use the gumtree email address is they do not disclose your personal details. I forwarded the email onto gumtree customer services and they confirm it was a scan and deleted the advert.

you only have to think about the recent e/bay security breach to realise that these scammers or scummers could be setting up fake accounts using genuine details .caveat emptor .

and in all honesty would you dream of buying a caravan from so far away anyway as we have enough problems showing up with locally purchased ones

You have to ask yourself, why would anyone in France (or anywhere else in the world) need or want to sell a caravan to someone in the UK?

If they were genuine sellers they'd be looking to sell locally, not overseas. Selling overseas just means that there's a whole load of hassle involved for both people to get the deal done.

Why would anyone try to make it harder for themselves than it needs to be when there would be plenty of buyers in France they could sell to?

Clearly its a scam and you were very sensible to walk away from it.

Treat anything that requires payment before seeing caravan as a scam, simple as that really.

its not just overseas unfortunately ,there was a spate of these last year with the vans usually being based in the far north of scotland or the scottish islands .

if you cannot view the van or car for that matter before paying then forget it .

and btw its not just vans its all sorts my grandson wanted some new seats for his car last year on e/bay and asked me to check it out as the seller was in essex ,i phoned him and said we would come down and pick the stuff up ,his reply was you can't as its in a warehouse wrapped up for dispatch .this was a supposed private seller selling parts from his own car .

Tbf though, anybody selling a caravan for several £1000s would be pretty daft to accept a Paypal payment.
